'Staniforth Severquick'

Another name I will have to make into a fictional character in my novels :D .... which I have yet to write..... putting off until next life time ;)

Oooh I know...

Hes the disillusioned surgeon that sniffs N2O and has a latex fetish  :salute:

OK, but what makes him stand out from all the other surgeons? ???

 :b2t:

I got a couple of axe handles on special offer and decided to finish this job off
I have touched up the blade but it was easier not to remove the nick in the blade
Now all I need is some nice weather and a tree to attack

Thanks Guys,
It wasn't too hard to do,
I was going to wait until I found a nice long piece of Ash log and try spiting it to make a handle the proper way, then these turned up  ;)

Nice work Sir :tu:

That's a hewing axe isn't it? How did it fare cross-grain?
(Obviously it worked  :D but how did it feel? did you reprofile?)

To be honest I am not sure what kind it is except that its made by 'Brades' and is a 'kent pattern ax (I think  )
I just put a bit of an edge on it, I hardly touched it so its the original shape  :tu:
I've been dying to try it out on something and it seems to cut well

I'm not sure I have got the hang of this chopping lark yet as I seemed to end up holding it like a baseball bat with both hands at the end (27ins long) instead of like a pick ax, sliding one hand down to meet the other at the end
I think I need to practice a bit more on something a bit bigger :salute:

It certainly looks like one.

If you can get hold of a copy of "the Axe Book" by Gransfors Bruks, it's got a some good info in it. Not just trivia, but techniques or effective and safe use (safe for you AND the axe). There's also stuff on storing firewoods etc if it's relevant to you. It comes free when you buy one of their axes, but I'm sure you can buy them seperately too.

Definitely a nice looking tool. I'm sure you'll get plenty of use and enjoyment from it  :salute:

GF: "He's stood out front with an axe and big smile on his face... let's not upset him :) "
Boss: " :o <gulps> Eh, yeah sure, whatever makes him happy."  :ahhh

This was made between 1930's to the late 60's
It's so pitted the only markings I can make out is the number '55' but these look to me like they were stamped after it was made  :-\
I have tidied up the badly sharpened edge and point, still don't know if I will re-handle it yet :D

Cool chopper Tony.  Am I right in thinking that the grip is rubberised?  If so, my understanding is that it's to protect against electric shock.  Seems appropriate somehow.

:D

I found this on another site, they were also issued to firemen maybe by a different maker but it says about the rubber here  :tu:

The 'ARPAX' was manufactured by the Chillington Tool Company Limited of Wolverhampton and is notable for its rubber handle, subject to a patent applied for in June 1938 and finally granted in December 1939.
Being encased in a tough rubber, the handle was claimed to be less liable to catch fire or break than the traditional wooden types, and would also protect the user from potentially fatal shocks if he or she happened to accidentally cut through electric cables. To this end, moulded into the handle was the comforting phrase 'TESTED 20.000 VOLTS'.
