I wonder if they'd replace a daily user in 5 years or so when the blade wears away, or whether than falls into the category of regular wear and tear?

Of course by the same token, at around $30 or so, you've probably gotten your money out of it by the time you wear the edge down that far.

That's true, but at 400 grit how rough is that edge going to be anyway :o

Your not going to be able to slice anything, but rip plenty ;D

My biggest concern is the edge geometry.  The more that blade is sharpened, the wider the edge gets, making it less effective.  With a regular knife that can take years, but for someone who works in a shipping department where the knife is constantly opened, used and folded, hundreds of times a day, it could be obvious in a few months.  Of course, that's probably why shippers tend to stick to cheap X-acto knives with break off or replaceable blades, or Super Knives etc.

It took about 6 years of constant use for my old cold steel voyager to need a bit of edge reprofiling, and like you say I very much doubt that would be the case for the edgie ::)

Yeah i think it would be a good idea for an emergency knife that doesn't get used very often but when you need it would be sharp and if you blunt it on something you could sharpen it very quickly.

Thanks for finding that info micky, its good to know these things. Oh and the Gerber MP400 has come to an end! I lost the one i was bidding on last night but got an email with a second chance offer as the person selling them has a few available! (its black as well! matches my mp600!)

Personally I'd stick with the Opinels... I love the high carbon blades on them, and they cut like anything, especially if you only sharpen them down to a medium stone and leave a jagged micro-serrated edge.  Plus, the blades are thin like SAK blades, so even after years of resharpening they are still quite usable, and there is very little drag in whatever you are cutting.

I carried a Number 2 for a long time in my watch pocket- I'll have to get another one sometime as I really miss it.

Yeah, that and being prone to corrosion are problems with high carbon steels, but in the right hands, they are pretty darned good!

In the wrong hands, like anything else, they are broken, rotted garbage.  >:(

Gang,

With regards to the Edgie...I have3 located ion various bags/vehicles.

None of mine automatically resharpen when I open/close them.

However, when closed I can "push" the blade a little bit closer to the handle and this is when the sharpening happens.  I believe it is a bit of a misnomer to say it sharpens on every open and close.  This element of control may reduce the amount of ware you lot are talking about.

For a cheapish, UK Legal knife this may be what your after.

Take care,

Flash
Thank's for clearing that up mate :), so are you from the UK as well then ???
