Did you remember to floss?

Run some unwaxed dental floss in the joints should help clean a fair bit of gunk out of it.  You can also soak it overnight in water and dish soap and/or run it through the dishwasher with all the implements open.  Scrubbing the joints with a toothbrush (someone else's works best! :P) will also help to get rid of some built up gunk.  I put together a Care and Feeding article a while back for SAKs, but it works just as well on multis:

I'm with def on this one, a toothbrush (kiddy size ones work very well), washing up liquid and hot water is all I use.

But if it really manky, I clean it as best I can then stick it in the dish washer :)

You could also try the Micky D method of holding it over your head while riding your motorbike through a car wash!   ;D

I'm with Micky on the one , tooth brush , hot water and washing up liquid . then rinse and I dry with a hair dryer . Have you access to compressed air as that is good for blowing out the crap before washing .

That's what I was going to write, Dunc!  :)  Compressed air can be bought in small cans at computer stores or even some hardware stores. Excellent for blowing out debris trapped in the tool(s). Also, if you have a garden hose with a jet nozzle on it...or use your thumb!....... that'll work fine, too.
