Got myself a new backpack!
on: September 24, 2010, 06:09:51 PM
I have been drooling over this backpack for ages and now I finally got it. The Norrøna Reconpack is a HUGE 125 L (about 32 US gallons) external frame backpack that was made with the Norwegian special forces and force recon in mind, and as far as I know it the Swedish and Danish military also uses it, so it is made to last and I am looking forward to using it.

Nahhh, just 4200 at XXL. But it's one of the best packs there is and this will last a lifetime.

That's around €500.
In my opinion it is a bit too much (I can't afford it, let's face it)
but I do understand why you like it. I'm in love with 'built to last' stuff. :)

What bothers me more than the price (I think 500 EUR is OK for a good quality backpack like that) is the size  :ahhh I have a 60L internal frame backpack, and when it is packed with lightweight equipment for a week outside I am hardly able to carry it the whole day. I wouldn't know what to do with 120L  :ahhh Well, I could fill it, but after that I couldn't move it anymore

Sadly I could see myself filling that up quite easily.  As Turnstone says though, the trick is in being able to carry it for a day or more. :D  Great looking bag though, I look forward to hearing how you get on with it mate. :tu:

Very nice (and HUGE!).

I have a 40L and 30L pack of similary construction which I love.  But the 40L pack easily packs in 20 Kg of gear.  I can't imagine filling and carrying 120L. :ahhh

You're set for a major winter expedition!

Thanx guys. I have done a bunch of research before I bought it and I came to the conclusion.
1: It’s better to have a to large pack rather than a to small one. I just need to use my head and pack sensibly on a weekend hike. Like I can put my sleeping bag uncompressed in the pack instead on the outside.
2: I am planning on taking hikes that last for 2-3 weeks and then this would be great.
3: I’m planning on getting my hunting license and need to haul a bunch of meat.
4: It’s the best pack you can get.

The thing that is so amazing with this pack is that you can load it up with 60 kg and it will feel like you are carrying 20 kg, the comfort of this beast under heavy loads is amazing.
I’m planning on using it on Monday so I will tell you how it worked out for me.

Grats on the new pack, though it looks painful to carry unless one was bigfoot.

Good luck with that! I thought I was fine carrying 20 kg on the West Highland Way. Could do it without trouble, but after 3 days my knees hurt and I had a tenosynovitis on my achilles tendon. 20 kg was just too much for my body  :ahhh

Now don’t mistake me, no matter how comfortable it is during heavy loads, 60 kg is still 60 kg and is a heavy load. The max load I have carried is 40 kg so I know that I can handle big loads.

Ok, today i hiked about 7 km, mostly uphill, with 30 kg on my bak. The pack was perfect and lived up to the ekspektation. BUT! I realised that it's been a while since my last hike and my legs was so tired that I almost sat down and cry, so I need to work out more.

But now I'm relaxing in a cabin and the fireplace is litt.............Sure wish I had a beer right now.

Sounds like the perfect time to have packed a little hip flask with some Whisky IMO. :)  I hope your legs are ok for tomorrow.

My legs will be fine, it's just that it's a long time since I have done a hike like this and my body is not used to it. But I will drop the 20 km hike that I planed (at home) on doing tomorrow.

Great to hear that you like your new backpack.  :tu:

I hope you can get home without more problems with your legs. Going downhill with a heavy pack can be a real pain for your knees  :ahhh Do you have trekking poles with you? They help a lot.

You're in a cabin, with internet access and no beer.  WHERE ARE YOUR PRIORITIES?!  :D

LOL, my internet access was my phone, the cabin didn’t even have any electricity, and the beer problem will never happen again.

Just got home and no problems with my legs, I’m just a bit out of shape.
