Grant!!
on: September 24, 2010, 07:29:41 PM
How do you pronounce your last name? I'm typically VERY good at pronouncing about any name correctly on the first try, which has impressed more than a few people with difficult names in the past. Yours though...been trying to wrap my mind around for 2 years now lol. Stupid Frenchanadian names  :P

I think it's La-mont-ah-nay, I hate that "g" in there though lol.

I think he did a lot more than that...

We have a very tired, old commercial.  There'll be a new one eventually.  I made that one initially to include on some little business card sized CD's I took to the first SHOT show I went to.

And yes, I managed to pronounce my own name in it successfully!  :D

I think lamɒntæŋ si the closest I can get using English phonems, guess the french has something like æ: which would replace the æ here
(sue me if I'm wrong, only had Phonetics for a month and a half and counting  :ahhh)

I've seen pictures of some MTo guys but this is the first time I hear their voices.
And what's so difficult with Grant's last name? I can pronounce it without any problem.

Do you think it's because France is right around the corner?! :D

"Lamone-tang". Like LAN without the N, then moan and then tang.
Close enough?

Seeing people here try to explain the pronounciation by using just letters is a perfect example why we have a phonetic alphabet   :D

Speaking of which, I learned that while studying English, but don't recall ever seeing it in use. Even in college textbooks they use letters to explain how to pronounce a word.

You'll only see it in "objective" places. Meaning dictionaries. It's impossible to describe how to say a work exactly with anything but the phonetic alphabet because other words have different pronounciation between dialects/sociolects/idilects.
