I'm not buying another Spyderco knife...
on: October 05, 2010, 09:02:05 PM
Alright, kind of annoyed here.  I have an Endura 2 (that I've shown off in a few pictures here).  I recently (on Sunday) had one of the washers stretch and tear out of the pivot.  Called up Spyderco about it, and here is the short version of what they said:

It cannot be fixed as SS Enduras are riveted.
You can send in the knife for evaluation but we cannot do anything about it.
It is our assertion that the knife will still work properly, and as such we will not replace it under warranty.

That's just... freaking fantastic.  This is NOT the first warranty issue I've had with Spyderco either.  I had a Native 3 where the lock was clearly failing (every time I used the knife there was more play in the lockup) and I had to argue with them to get it fixed.

This is a major PITA, and at least from my perspective, a clear workmanship/materials issue.

Every other knife/multitool company I've dealt with on warranty concerns have been gracious, helpful, and ultimately replaced or fixed said knife/MT without issues.  While I like Spyderco's designs, I'm no longer willing to deal with them.

Spyderco has a forum, you might consider joining it as Sal (owner) participates in it regularely and you might
get some idea's on how to go forth with the problem?

That's the problem with spyderco, they keep no parts in stock so they cannot actually fix any knife. If it's relatively new and broken they'll just replace it, if it's disco'ed they'll tell you there's nothing they can do and you are out of luck.

Just something to keep in mind when buying their knives, they are not nearly as generous as other companies when it comes to warranty (some others are too generous IMO). Thou chances are if you buy new you won't need it, but in your case you don't know what the PO did to it, so really can't say if it's a wear/abuse/warranty issue.

Here's the thing - even if the previous owner abused the knife, like totally tried to destroy it - how does a washer become stretched out and tear?  The stainless Enduras are riveted together, and it's still riveted together as we speak - I had to dig out the broken washer with a pair of tweezers as it was sticking out around the edges of the knife tang.

I ended up calling Spyderco again to get some clarification.  I'll call the Spyderco warranty rep "C" (anyone who's dealt with Spyderco's warranty department will know who it is).  Conversation the second time around went like this:

C: Normal wear and abuse isn't covered under Spyderco's warranty.
Me: You can tell if it's normal wear or abuse over the phone?
C: Well, no, not really.  I've never heard of the washers on a riveted Endura stretch out and break like that before.
Me:  If you've never heard of the washers stretching and breaking like that, how could it possibly be "normal wear"?
C: You can send the knife in for warranty for evaluation, but if we have to take the knife apart and examine it and it's not a warranty issue, we can't put it back together because it'll ruin all the rivets.

So, right now my choices are either keep a somewhat functioning knife, or spend the money and send it in to Spyderco and *hope* that they'll replace it under warranty, because otherwise I'll be out a knife and the money for postage, when they originally said it wouldn't be covered under warranty.

This is disappointing. I'd always heard good things about Spyderco. Hopefully you can get it resolved.

This definitely shades my opinion of Spyderco. :-\

This shouldn't be an issue.

At all.

I am sill not changing my perception of spyderco and will still continue to purchase them. I have not personally had any issues with them and I think thier products are top notch, Until I encounter a problem I hold them in the same respects as Benchmade, SOG, etc. I have an old Endura in ATS55 and it works just as good as when I bought it, boggles me that the washers can become distorted like that. I would love a pic if any can be found on the internet, we have pics of boken tools on here, wonder if I can dig something up for spyderco. I wouldnt own so many if I didnt trust them.

I agree with Dave, Spyderco's customer service has always been good to me and I've never had a problem with any of their knives (even their riveted knives).  I am however, always nervous about riveted knives - regardless of brand - simply because they're never an easy fix.

As Sean mentioned, you should post this on the Spyderco forum and maybe Sal can help you out.

Agree.  That is why I think it sounds like a warranty issue.

I actually already posted this picture in the Spyderco thread, but here it is again:

That's all that's left of the washer on the right side of the pivot.  For now, I've taken the knife to a local store that does OTC warranty exchanges, and see if they can get a better answer out of Spyderco than I can.  For the record, when talking to the store manager he said that the runaround that I got from the warranty department mirrored the story he got from a lot of people.

If House of Knives can't help me out, posting on the Spyderco forums will be the next step.

You should post about this in the Spyderco forum over at www.bladeforums.com. I'd be amazed if you didn't get some help via there. Sal participates there, btw.
