Freestyle. The first Leather that I'm meh about.
on: October 08, 2010, 08:20:13 PM
I won't go so far as to say I don't like it, since I haven't had time to do much more than open it up and fiddle with it for a bit.  However, I'm not excited by the Freestyle like I am about my Crunch of my c301 knife.  Maybe for $35 I'm expecting too much...though considering my SURGE was $40 and my Blast $25, I don't know...but the Freestyle feels like, like...like an ironic multitool more than a multitool.  It's both needle nose pliers and pliers?  Why not just say It's got a serrated knife and a knife as well, then you can list as having six tools.

It's fun to hold, I'll give it points because it looks like something Batman would have on his utility belt, but it's certainly not going to replace my SAK Super Tinker on EDC or my c301, that I carry on the weekend.

My "meh" over the Freestyle makes me glad I saved $10 and didn't get the Skeletool that was on sale.  It also makes me glad to see the Super Tool getting Leatherman back to making multis that are real tools, not just pliers with benefits.

I like the freestyle because of it's simplicity. I don't carry it every day, but times where I need a knife - and might need some pliers (fishing) it fits the bill perfectly.

It's definitely a niche tool. I'm sure you'll find a situation where it's most appropriate then you'll fully appreciate it.

I carry my handyman and my freestyle when i'm not at work. Sure it's not a workhorse but with the clip it's very pocketable and handy.

I think of the freestyle as more of a knife with a bonus set of pliers.
A little Leatherman information.

Thanks for the pics Pacu. You've inspired me to give my freestyle a little more pocket time.

I'm liking mine quite a bit , i also pair it with a handyman . When I'm working , a "real" plierbased Multi just isn't worth the weight penalty ( go a belt load of Klines ) , but a small OHO blade , and a spare set of pliers is very handy . The blade on my Freestyle is very handy . Lots of belly for good slicing .fine point ,and a partial serration for cutting fibreglass banding tape etc .

That is exactly the way I feel about both the freestyle and skeletool.  All I REALLY NEED when walking around for both work and at home is a knife for cutting open boxes/tape/shrink wrap etc, but having the pliers in the pinch is great.  With the skeletool you get also possibly one of the coolest looking bottle openers ever.  It impresses people every time.

I'm going to get a Freestyle to pair with a SAK as well, though I think it'd make a pretty awesome combo with a Micra as well.  That's pretty lightweight, but still with enough tools for most things you encounter daily.
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

I carried my Freestyle with me to work today, just to test it outside of the home.  The one time I needed an MT today, I fell back on my Crunch, because it's got bigger jaws than the Freestyle.  The Freestyle may be a good fit for some people, but it's not a good fit for me.

It's still nice to have one, mind you.  Like I said in the first post, it's fun to hold and feels like some Batman toy.

I handled a Freestyle a couple times as my former boss EDC'd one. I honestly never liked it. I much, much prefer my Skeletool. Compared to the Freestyle you gain very little in bulk and weight for a lot more in utility. The Freestyle just doesn't make much sense to me personally.

I am actually liking the Freestyle more and more for EDC carry. Like most people, I am combining it with a SAK (Today it's a Huntsman), but the two together easily fit into my jeans watch pocket. It's handy, even without all the tools of my Blast or other LM multi's.

But as a stand alone MT, it is really limited without some sort of phillips/screwdriver. I can see how someone might be a bit disappointed after using one of the full sized tools for a while. I only paid $20 for mine, so I didn't feel too bad. :)

I have those at the row currently. Easy pocket carry combo. With micra screw drivers you can do small on the fly needs. Not heavy duty set but light pocket carry set I could say.

Same toolset with one tool would mean already a bit bulky tool. Example juice xe6 would do well but it is already not so pocket friendly as these two fellows.

I guess if all you need is a knife blade and pliers it'll work. I see it as more of an adjunct tool. Not worth the $$$ to me though.

I agree freestyle itself is more like a combo tool. But with easy pocket carry some compromise is needed.

I like the Freestyle better than the Skeletool.  While the Freestyle may not be much of a tool (just pliers and a knife) it also doesn't take up a lot of space and isn't heavy.  The Skeletool I find is quite large for what it is.  A tool that takes up that much space should have more function.
