Guess what, i've posted in this thread but not actually done my little intro thing....oooops!

Well better late than never (why do lecturers never agree with that philosophy!) I'm Ryan aged 21, born and raised in Yorkshire, UK, currently attending Loughborough Uni, studying Mechanical Engineering.
Brief history of my addiction:
Got my first SAK at around 11/12 but lost it somewhere on a beach in Scotland.
Intervening period had a multitude of cheap sak/pst knockoffs, and knew none of them were any good.
Got a SAK climber for my 17th (i think) birthday and was immensely happy.
Then when i was 18 i bought myself a Gerber MP600, Swisstool and a Leatherman Wave all in the space of about 4 months, and the addiction took hold!

I like to get outside and go Cycling (both on and off road) walking and camping. Seem to have an affinity for making stuff go boom (like the time we made a pulse jet in my mates back yard....that was safe!). I love listening to music and play guitar. Technology fascinates me and hence my room looks like the terminator has just blown up and left bits of himself hanging around. And food, i like food, in vast quantities...i love my metabolism!

Well thats the thread dragged kicking and screaming back on topic....my work here is done!

Mechanical Engineering eh? Do you already have a career in mind?

Not a clue really! I really need to start figuring that out, or at least narrow it down to a few options.

You made a pulse jet :o I'm impressed, how long did it last before it shook it's self to pieces ???

Amazingly it never destroyed itself, however we only managed to get it going for over 5secs once, although it did run for a couple of minutes that time, then the fuel ran out. We were as amazed as anyone we managed to do it!

I am really impressed mate, the nazi's tried to use pulsejets in manned aircraft, but the vibration was so intense, it made all the test pilot's violently sick :o, thats why they only used it operationally in the V1 :)

if you like pulse jets you could do worse than check this site out :)

Hi all, just thought I'd post on this newbie thread to say hello. I've been reading for a while, joined (a couple weeks ago) and posted today for the first time.

I mentioned on another thread about a give-away I will be starting soon. i am looking for ideas on how to do this, so please chime in.

I am 49 years old and have been carrying around stuffed pockets and loaded belts my whole life.

Currently it's just me and my two collies (Seven, a three year old sable and Binger, an eight month old female blue merle) living on 15 acres outside the small central Virginian town of Mineral.

I'll be telling about and showing some of my toys soon.

BTW, how do you get those cool icons into your posts and is there a place to donate to help fund the Forum?

As much as this is a multitool site, I'd actually love to see a picture of those dogs!

Most folks around here have opted for the more manageable sized Shelties rather than the full sized collies and I've always been fascinated by them.

Interestingly enough, the only time I've ever been seriously bitten was by a collie, but that never got in the way of being good friends with the dog and the owners!

Welcome to the forum Calvin- I am glad that you are enjoying the site.  We try hard to make it worth checking out, and we are a little lax rules, thread drift etc, but that's what makes the place fun to be around.  Oh yeah, that and the top notch folk we have hanging around!

You hit my soft spot Def, asking about my collies. Every since I was a kid my brother and I have always owned collies.  :)

Let me get it together with my cameras and I will post some pics of Seven & Binger, along of course with my toys.

Thanks to micky d for sending me the link to the picture posting tutorial. i just need the time, overtime at work is killing me!

I can relate to your dog bite story. My worst dog bite was also by a collie. My own collie! I was trying to break up a fight between him and another dog and during the melee he whirled around and chomped on a finger, severing the nerve. I had to have surgery and to this day don't have full use of that finger. Talk about a lasting memory! His name was Kaiser and was a great dog. i really miss him.

I think the bite I got was because the dog panicked.  I followed him into the kitchen and when he turned around I was blocking the way out.  I'd never had a problem with him before or since (he's long gone now) and that's about the only thing I can think of that might have caused him to bite.  Of course, that was about 25 years ago so my memory may not be as crystal clear as it could be.

I'm owned by a Siberian Husky at the moment, and up until last year I also had a dogo argentino or Argentine Mastiff, but he passed away after a bout with liver cancer.  As much as I love my husky, the dogo was the best dog I've ever met, and being a crazy dog guy, I've met lots of them!  My avatar is a drawing of a dogo, and I have it to honor all Pete and I went through.  I know what you mean when you say you miss Kaiser.  All dogs are great, but some just defy description, don't they?

Def, when you say you are currently owned by your Siberian Husky, I feel the same way. Like the old saying goes "Truer words was never spoke". My dogs have it so easy that I guess boredom (I work almost every day, so I'm gone a lot) is their only problem. That's why I got the "Binger" (female) so Seven (male) would have someone to play with while I'm gone. Boy is he still jealous when I get home and she wants to greet me at the same time!  :ahhh

I want to get one of those signs that reads "&%$? THE DOG, BEWARE OF OWNER!"  He is a great dog, but huskies are terrible watchdogs.  They pretty well don't care what goes on around them provided you don't steal their toys, food or the stretch of rug they are sleeping on.

He was a great companion to my other dog because Pete was a great watchdog, and Chinook would always back him up.  Chinook won't guard by himself, but he'd also never get left behind when Pete was doing something!

That's a great system, both doing what they do best.

At my house Seven will bark at a strange twig the wind has blown onto the lawn and Binger just follows him around barking also.

You know if i was'nt such a Collie nut, a Husky would be my next choice. Beautiful dogs

They are great dogs, but as I've said before, they aren't very dog-like.  Typical husky traits are about as far from collies as you can get in the canine world.  Huskies are very independent and act more like cats than dogs.  They eat any animals smaller than them (except other dogs- they are exempt from the menu, but cats, birds, frogs, lizards, mice, squirrels etc are all in deep trouble!) they only follow commands when they feel like it, pay attention to you when they want something, and pester you until they get it!  The worst thing is, you can't let them off the leash.  Huskies are runners- that's what they love to do, and they don't pay attention to where they are going so can be easily run over, and even if they don't get squashed, they don't know their way home.

For thousands of years people have been commenting on how beautiful this breed is, and it's certainly gone to their heads!

I can agree with that sentiment, I've only known one bad dog (A tervuren belgian shepherd with canine scitzophena, best dog in the world, when she wasn't trying to tear lumps of you!), But I've meet crap loads of bad people ::)

Well thats not my dog, just and example of the breed of dog I had to put down :(, her name was shona, and she was the fastest, smartest, strongest, toughest dog I ever owned, she was the perfect dog, but then her personality would flip, and all her qualities became big scary problems, (I've still got a few scares from where I just wasn't quite fast enough ::)), gone but not forgotten :)

I'm currently dogless since having to had my last dog put down, and I don't think I'll get another for a while, at least until, my life's back on track :D
