very nice  :ahhh . I read something on blade forums about it, the australian army ordered 10,000 Swisstools. They trialed the supertool200 and a SOG and the Swisstool won the contract. They should be easier to get hold of, if so many were produced.

I've being doing a little research and although I can't confirm I'm 100% correct here goes with my theory .

The Number on the side of the tool is part of a NSN ( Nato Stock Number ) and is a parts/store number. I'm a bit confused because Australia isn't part of NATO   But it is in the British Commonwealth and so shares the Military Broad Arrow just like Canada .

Onto the number itself . I've found out the the first part 5110 puts it into the Handtool category. Next is the two numbers 25 which is the NCB pair and is from the U.S designation meaning National Codification Bureau and is used to record which country was the first to code the item , which one first recognized it is an important item of supply.Britain is 99 the U.S numbers are 00 and 01.

Now heres the crunch Norway issued the BO std Swisstool 3 years before the Australians did so it stands to reason the the Number 25 is for Norway maybe Switzerland but my moneys on Norway as they would have triled several different tools and chosen the Swisstool .Norway is also a member of NATO so that would explain the full number 5110-25-147-5018 .But and this is where I need some help from the guys from Norway because as far as I know Norway doesnt use the broad Arrow ( crows foot ) like the Brits and commonwealth countries do .So while I'm 100% sure this tool is Std Australian issue I really would like to see whats stamped on the Norwegian models , maybe nothing is stamped on them  but then why stamp a number that roots lie within NATO onto a tool for a country that isnt in NATO

I'm confused lol over to you guys .

Yep Dunc the little research I have done looking into the ID was a real mixed bag

Jmora I would be REALLY keen to see that info on the Aussie Military MT contract too.

I am 99% sure the Australian Navy uses a standard non BO Swisstool but I have never seen one for sale. I suspect the Airforce would use a non BO Swisstool as well. I think the Swisstools are only issued to 'speSmurfpillst' soldiers & the majority of issued tools would be too the Army with a smattering too the Airforce & Navy. All speculation on my behalf though.

I saw one worrying item on Aussie Ebay this ;

A Talylors made Schrade MT with a MSN :ahhh    , I contacted the guy who outbid me too win it.I think he is in the Army Reserves but he could not tell me much about the tool. It is well documented how BAD the ST1 has become under Taylors ownership of Schrade with exceedingly poor fit & finish. I really hope the Army has not dropped Victorinox as their MT supplier.

not that much info really, it was only mentioned in passing on another subject, and it seemed to be hearsay at that, anyway another piece of the puzzle.

Looking good Dunc! :tu: Nice pics, and thanks for the research :)

Here's a little something I found while googling in your footsteps: http://5110.iso-group.com/NSN/5110-25-147-5018

It says that Norway is indeed the code country :)  (and down below it references the sheath number too)

I apologise for the lighting, my dungeon makes it hard to take pictures. I can choose between No Light, or Extreme Reflection from various surfaces.

I don't think I'll carry this.

Not because it is particularly special to me, but because it's not my style.

It was just another moment of weakness where I saw something I can't get in most retailers and impulse bought it even though I don't want or need it!

It is absolutely brand spankin'
The discolouration is just my greasy fingers on the new finish.

Strange fortunes, as it was never my intention to acquire either of them!

Diggers still use the FRED Pthycrpg.

I don't have anything handy to try it out on, but in the past I've had success with them.

Obviously you can get these from your friendly local soldier, however they are also available commercially. I'm not sure if the commercial ones are the same (ie, have the NSN number) or just similar models.
