Just made a light tent
on: October 25, 2010, 12:39:05 AM
Finally got off my butt and made one, not 100% complete yet, and still trying different camera option. Result seems half decent thou. If any guru has any suggestions I'll gladly hear them.  :)

Can you take a pic of the light tent? I have been thinking that I need to make myself a light tent also.

Nice pics BTW :tu:

I like the result.  :o Soft shadows, and no overexposed parts... the tent is working fine.

And if you could post pics and "howto" of the tent, it could be great.

Thanks! Sure I'll take a pic of the setup tomorrow, by the way it only cost me $10 in parts so very cheap to make. You will probably laugh too after seeing what it looks like. :D

Might I add that wax paper makes excellent soft box sides and top.  :salute:

That's a good tip, thanks. I don't have the traditional top and sides on mine but could use a better diffuser than tissue paper.

Okay I'm experimenting with chako's suggestion, so the pics of actual box will take a little longer, but you'll get a better setup.  :P

The light look to be better diffused, pics in my 1st post are of before change, in my latter post are after change. Plus it's more permanent, I was using facial tissue paper before and they damage easily.

Okay here's the setup, told you it's very crude. Most of the stuff are scavenged from around the house, only thing I had to buy were the bulbs and poster board. Mind you I'm using a 10 years old camera that's probably on its way out, so you can easily get better results.

Thanks for that Jz, I might do the same thing as you.  I'll find a box and perhaps fit it with Chako's suggestion
of wax paper.  They sure are the way to take pictures a step up.  :tu:

If you use wax paper for the sides and top, you can also play with lighting. Distance of the light source from the sides will give you different lighting characteristics. I also have seen paper covered in Petroleum jelly used...but the wax paper should do the trick and be a lot easier to use.

Also, if you can get a nice ring fluorescent light...the larger the better, you can have a ton of fun playing with that as well. Center your small object in the center, and you will have even lighting all around. The fun part of photography is the experimenting. The possibilities are endless.

My original plan is to use two or three full spectrum fluorescent tubes, should leave almost no shadow. But they only comes in the longest size (5 ft?) and getting tubes and fixtures is expensive.

You don't need full spectrum providing your camera white balance is good. Now if you shoot in RAW, then you don't even have to worry about that as you can change the white balance after the fact. :salute:

@jzmtl: thank you.

How close the light has to be from the subject? Does that really matter?

If it's too close the light won't be diffused enough, you need some distance for the diffuser to work. No ill effect from too far other than you may not get enough light.

My camera is is probably too ancient, I found even with WB I can't get as good a pic with lower color temp bulbs, so that's why I wanted full spectrum.
