Custom alox?

Any one make Alox customs? I have an idea for a new model (Farmer + file/metal saw + pruning blade/electrician's blade layer), but I don't know if anyone can build one or what the cost would be. Any ideas?

Can the file fit in the 93mm frame? I don't seem to have seen that type of mod.

I assume it does, but I really don't know. That's why I need to find someone who does this sort of thing.

Actually, wasn't there an Alox Swisschamp floating around a while back? That would have the file in it, right?

Yes the 91mm file can be drilled out and fitted to the 93mm frame.

Now the pruner/electrician layer seems like a no brainer but... I've tried it (long time ago) and am trying to remember why it didn't work

It was either the kick sizes or blocking of nail nicks but I can't remember which

That's one thing I want. it could make the perfect knife for me as a combo or a do it all. They do it on those fancy 91mm collectors, and the tools are available on the 93mm on different models at the right ends, so maybe if it really won't work it was a nail nick thing.... maybe with the right tools... since I think the small pruner is available on either end on 93mm knives and so it the sheepsfoot. Maybe there are different profiles for these that would allow the two in the same layer, because on Alox I don't want to give up the reamer.

Yeah, I work in telecom, and I think this would be a perfect pairing to a Cybertool Lite and/or a multi-tool for me. I thought about a customized Cybertool Lite, but decided that a custom Farmer might be a better option. I'd rather carry 2 knives that fit my hands rather than 1 that's too big. I hope we can figure out a way that this could work!

It could well have been a nail nick clearance issue as I remember I needed to retain the opener layer. However keep in mind that both those blades replace the can opener normally and the opener backspring isn't symmetrical so it could still be a kick issue

I'll have to physically check.

pruner and electricians blade in the same knife is not a problem but it's not easily possible in the same layer.
You cannot exchange the bottler opener with a pruner or electricians blade. The nail nick would be on the wrong side.

How are the layers arranged on a Swisschamp XLT? Are the pruner and electrician's blade on the same layer? If so, is it possible to do a similar set on an Alox frame?

There's a few of those knocking around

No real issues. You drill out a 91mm scissors and its backspring and fit them into the 93mm frame. Additional liner and a bit of brass required. Action on the scissors will be acceptable but don't expect it to be as snappy as the tools that are designed to fit that frame.

You can add snap using a brass tube around the brass pin. In this way the snap is as usuall.

I'd considered that but I felt that the snap was acceptable without and I must admit, I felt better not putting the additional strain on the backspring as it was already being employed in a role it was not designed for

I'm probably just paranoid

Very nice idea with the extra bushing! I like snap. I noticed my EDC, probably an early scissor mod have no snap. I have some other thoguht hat seem to have more, not sure if they did anything special or it's just in the peening. I'm not sure if any have factory level snap.

Did anyone come to the conclusion if the pruner/electrician blades from the XLT can be used in the same layer on a 93mm? What if they were in the layer behind the bottle/can openers or after the saw? can you get access to the nail nicks then?

I did some investigation about this issue today.
I took a farmer and exchanged the bottle/can opener layer with a pruner/electrician blade layer and it works!

You can even add the bottle/can opener layer. Then the electrician blade is hidden behind the can opener, but it's still possible to open it.
