Favorite SAK Nailfile
on: December 19, 2012, 07:01:21 PM
My latest Saks must have a nail file on them. My favorite is the Wenger nail file followed by the Vic nail files. The Vic exception is the Executive nail file. Its more of a fine cut regular file than a nail file IMO. It tends to hang up when filing my nails unlike the Wenger & Vic nail files. What is your experience or am I just coo coo?

Huge Sak fan so I would have to say the Wenger but I think the leatherman style cs has them beat. The file is much longer making it Easier to use. Funny thing is I don't carry it, seems like I always go for a Sak.

The classic , non SD, one is good, but so is the LM Micra, which has a twisty front bit to really dig in the nails and get them clean..

I think the 85mm Wenger nailfiles are the best. The rough side is face away from the main blade thus keeping it scratch-free. Not sure why Victorinox does it the other way around.

My vote goes to the Vic Executive nail file. :tu:  The Wengers are also good.

That wasn't always the case, most of my Wengers have the rough side pointing towards the main blade.

I'll go for the 58mm SD tip on the classic. Small enough that I can use it very low key, and the SD tip works on most small phiilips screws. I love 58mm SAK's.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

I prefer the non SD Classic myself over the SD version.

None for me. I strongly prefer a small, secondary, blade in lieu of the nailfile on all my SAKs that have them, Wenger and Victorinox. A blade in any style (spear point, clip point, etc) is one hundred times more useful to me than a nailfile (and yes I know the nailfile can be used for many other things than nails). I never in my life had the need for a nailfile. I hate them. Here, I said it. It's just my personal preference. I do not have anything against the people who like and want the nailfiles on SAKs (and it seems there is a majority). Just that I would like my SAKs without nailfiles.

Wenger: please consider doing at least one 85mm EvoWood model with the small blade.

Victorinox: you kept the Recruit (for now) but please bring back the Cadet II if you still make the small blade used on the Recruits.

I'd have to say the Wenger 85mm is my favorite, though the Vic 74mm is a close second.  Both work very well for me, with the Wenger getting the edge for being a bit more aggressive.  On my EDC Evo16 I filed the tip of the nail file down so it works as a small flat driver in a pinch.  :tu:

That's a good point... where is that small-blade in the EvoWood series.  Maybe MTO can point this out to them at SHOT this coming year.

As far as we know so far, MTO will not be going to SHOT this year....   :(

I prefer the Vic nail file as in the Cadet, second the Wenger file, then the nail file side of the older style metal saw in the Swisschamps. Then the 58mm Vic, the newer Vic metal file and last the Executive's. I didn't have a good chemistry with Executive as a whole.
I miss a nice nail file on my Vic SC XLT. I wish it had the nail file on the hook. The metal file is aggressive, good for manicuring a Hippopotamus or Rhino perhaps.

I gave the wife 6 different SAKs. She liked the 84 Vic LNF the best. The next was the 85 Wenger. She put my favorite last.
