Machete
on: October 21, 2010, 01:47:04 AM
I have this ten years old machete bought in Mexico for a few dollars. Probably made of the worst steel there is, but I like it and the leather sheath looks very good, so I want the whole knife to get back in shape.

The sharpening part will be taken care of by my usual 'pro' (it's a shop, they know what to do) but the blade doesn't look too well. There are no rust spots on it, as far as I can see, there are lots of scratches and in general it looks 'opaque', but there must be something I can do to polish it and make it shiny.

What do you suggest?

Oh, by the way, before you do it...

Personally I wouldn't worry mate. A working knife like that deserves a few character marks like that :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

As Lord of the spammer says. It give the machete charakter and its a lot of work and its never be as good as you you want. You must do it buy hand with paper and sticks. But it never looks good if you dont remove the handle.

Which is riveted and that means it would be a lot of work to remove it (and put a new one back).
I guess I'll force myself to like the 'character marks'. :tu:

yes do not worry about scratches and color, your machete is sorta "sealed" with that "opaque" look (like a patina) and that will protect it's wear better and removing that could increase rust or give you unwanted problems later.

it's personality and a nice/good thing!
