About once a month they have a 2 day sale on Duracell Pre-Charged AA and AAA cells (white top cells that are actually relabelled Sanyo Eneloops).
They sell them for $6.99 - $8.99 for a 4-pack (price varies from sale to sale).

Eneloop FTW. I'm in the process of replacing every battery I have with Eneloops. They work amazingly, last forever, can be recharged around 1000 times, and in the long run are MUCH cheaper if you go through a lot of batteries like me. Not to mention the "green" benefits. Unless I'm in some kind of a bind where I need to grab whatever is on hand, I don't see myself ever using anything else. Alkaline is a part of the past IMO and don't ever intend to look back.

Huge +1 for Eneloops and the like - I don't buy anything else now.

I also use lithium cells for a few of my lights which are great if you can be bothered to get in to them and their separate chargers. I have a couple of RCR123 lights and some 18650's too.... both a lot brighter than the NiMH ones.

I don't trust alkalines unless they are for immediate use and I have no rechargeables to hand.

As for the old trust D cell Maglites, they can be modded and converted to take other batteries including Li and then run really nice high powered dropins

All my torches run either AA or AAA LSD NiMH cells.

This is good information, but what do I do for D-cells? My Maglight almost turned into a paperweight last spring when the batteries expanded.

Eneloop makes a set up for that too. It's a D size adapter that fits a couple AA inside it. Though I think 4 D cells would equal 12 AA, but the option is there.

I wouldn't bother if your D-Cell MagLite is incandescent. The runtime would be painfully short. If it's LED though, no worries, the runtime on the Eneloops won't be too bad.

You can buy those adapters from other sources, BTW. You don't have to use Eneloop brand. I have this set, and it works well:
