Looking for a new knives
on: October 31, 2010, 06:47:38 PM
I am in search of two new knives and would like some help choosing.
Firstly I need a good EDC folder, perhaps s Spyderco?
Secondly I am also looking for a good large fixed blade knife for a BOB application (not an EDC blade).

Suggetions would be appreciated, and please be sure to list both knives.

I am NOT looking for a single knife to do both, I need two separate knives.

Thanks guys.

Size?  Price?  Brand preference?  Blade Style?  Weight?  You might have to expand a little here.

For BOB applications maybe a Kukri might be an idea, as there's no fine survival/bushcraft knife imo :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Well as far as size/weight goes, an EDC folder should be pocket sized, while a BOB knife should be a good bit larger, though not a sword.
I don't have a particular brand preference, so long as its a good knife.
Regarding blade style I still don't have a particular preference. The folder will be a heavily used daily knife so I would prefer a strong blade material.

Generally I am looking for lots of suggestions for both blades. I am asking for people to make recommendations.

For BOB applications maybe a Kukri might be an idea, as there's no fine survival/bushcraft knife imo :)

I had not really considered the Kukri, but I have wanted to get one for a while and I do like the idea.

Did someone say kukri? :D

If you're thinking about a Spyderco, but aren't entirely sure, check out Byrd. They're cheap and you get the general idea of a Spyderco.

This is the type of response I am looking for:

EDC Folder:
Gerber Evo because its a really lousy knife and I gave it away because I hated it. (preferably a positive comment on a good knife)

BOB knife:
SOG Tigershark because its massive and looks awesome and probably too big to use. (I don't have one so that's just my impression of it.)

OK then.

EDC Folder
Byrd Meadowlark G-10 PE
It's a great knife, small enough for my little hands, but big enough to actually get some stuff done. The G-10 makes it feel super expensive, even though it isn't. I got mine for less than $20. It's slightly heavy (I like it that way) and the clip is a little too big.

EDC folder:
Benchmade Griptillian, good steel for a reasonable price, not to heavy, steel liners, several different blade types available

Fixed:
I only have one, but it's an Ontario Spec Plus, there are a few different models to chose from, still breaking mine in, but so far a fantastic knife, holds a fantastic edge, very high value for your money

EDC Folder:
Kershaw Skyline:  Great steel, very lightweight, inexpensive and Kershaw's warranty service is the best in the business.  14C28N is a very hard steel but relatively easy to sharpen as it's very pure, but some people have had (very minor) corrosion problems - I'm one of them.  However, I really like flipper knives.

or

Leatherman E33L:  Incredibly good steel for the price, Leatherman's warranty, really nice flipper opening design.  Incredibly tough knife - I've thrashed mine and it's still in great condition.  Fit and finish has a few niggles, though.

I would also suggest a BM Griptilian for a folder, I've had mine for years and it works great.
you can get it in 154CM Stainless Steel, 551H2O, D2, PE or Combo, different tips (i.e. drop-point, sheeps-foot, tanto etc), colors, mini, and more!
the prices vary so shop around.

Now understand the scales (handles) are what they call, "Noryl GTX" or plastic and at first they feel "cheap" and give a general feeling of "this ain't gonna last" impression but it's so not true! everyone who has given them a chance soon learns they are tough and can take lots of abuse and it holds in your hand pretty good. I guess it's an inexpensive material that works really good.

It also uses "Axis" locks that are fab! strong, fast and many like em (you can see them on youtube).

don't forget SAKs are great too! my current favorite, more than just a blade, I use a OHT or a Farmer. I like more tools then just one blade.
_____________________________________
For fixed blade I personally tend to think EDC and B.O.B. as the same, something tough/can last/and you can use for many applications. you don't want something in your B.O.B. that will rust or break when you need it the most!

Try looking at Rat Cutlery's "RC" series blades. Great warranty and one all around good blade, very popular with a decent price.

Ka-bar has been a favorite for a long time; also many here like Cold-Steel blades because they do the job and are inexpensive (yuck warranty).

Ranger knives are really nice, Justin Gingrinch used to make them himself (a real army Ranger) but now Ontario makes em for him but he makes sure they are to his specs and warranties, great blades and super tough and good prices, I have an RD7.

I personally like Busse/SwampRat/Scrapyard but they are hard to get and can be expensive.

For a EDC folder I would recommend looking at........

Benchmade Griptilian
Spyderco Endura-4 Series
Kershaw JunkyardDog II
Buck 110 or 112
Buck Vantage Pro

For more heavy use EDC's I suggest looking at  ZT Knives Model 0200, Benchmade Rift, or maybe a Buck Alpha Folding Hunter in 154CM.

And if you are not strung up on just locking folders I also highly recommend looking at some Large Stockman slipjoints. A Case #75 pattern Stockman, or one of the Queen built #49 pattern Cattle Kings or Schatt & Morgan Large Reverse Gunstock Stockmans.

For BOB fixed blade I suggest...........

Ranger Knives: RD Series, Afghan, or TFI.
Bark River: Bravo-1, Fox River, Gameskeeper, Lil' Chute
Blackjack: Model-5
KaBar: Becker Series
RAT: Either Ontario or ESEE built versions.

If you are expecting your BOB FB to take some serious pounding then go with a Ranger RD Series.

I get the general idea of what a BOB knife is, but... can someone give me the signification of the acronym? Cannot find it with google.

I personally have a KA-BAR, USMC model, straight edge, B.O., leather shealth. Not too expensive, take a loooot of abuse! Well balanced, a little bit light when chopping trees or branchs. Hard to sharpen.

I found that site, once: http://www.knifetests.com/

I've been thinking about this and I think you need three knives
A folding EDC
A medium fixed blade
A large knife/chopper

The first how about a Buck110? but maybe you want something a bit smaller?

Medium, Have you looked at a stainless Mora? A lot of knife for a little money

Then how about a machete or Kuk? (Then you will have to decide how much to spend on these :ahhh )
Everything’s adjustable

Ka-Bar USMC Short.  Good steel, legendarily tough, lasts forever, great warranty.

@Sparky415: Thank you for the precision!

Well... for Zombies... My Kabar might be a little too short, but could be attach to a pole to make a lance. :D

This said, I confirm my Ka-Bar could be a candidate, as it is in my BOB . Light, heavy duty (I open cans with it, I can use it as a hammer (with the knob at the end on the handle)).

Now, If I had to buy a new knife, I will probably go with a SOG SEAL pup. Small and looking rough, tough and good. And I especially enjoyed that mod, here : . And more sheath options to wear the knife. Ka-bar has just a very basic sheath :(

And don't forget: as I always says: always back-up your emergy kit, having two in two different places (or pocket).

For now it seems I have come to a slightly narrower range of what I am looking for for the EDC folder:
Ambidexteroious
Locking
Lightweight
High grade steel
Serrated; fully serrated or combo

That being said I am currently looking at The Spyderco Manix2 and the Benchmade Mini-Griptillian.
Both have 154CM steel and seem to be about the same size.

Further suggestions of similar knives would be appreciated, possibly with S30V steel?

Spyderco Delica

Ambidexteroious - check
Locking - check
Lightweight - check
High grade steel - check
Serrated; fully serrated or combo - check

Sierra Trading Post has them for a pretty good price, if you can find a coupon code.

How about a benchmade Bone collector series small axis folder?  They are really cool and although more expensive than a griptillian the handle material (g-10) is better in my opinion because it adds a little heft that gives it balance.

CQC-7 makes a good point (and good to see you buddy!), G10 in folders is nice, I have a BM710 and it really feels solid and well balanced :tu:

I looked up the bone collector, I really like it. I think it's a good deal and not much more expensive than what I paid for my regular grip. I do agree that the Griptilian has a plasticy feel and doesn't inspire confidence at first but it's a solid folder than can hold up to alot of abuse as an edc.

I carried a regular griptillian as my "deer gutter" for years.  It never failed me.  I broke off the pocket clip (my fault, and benchmade even sent me one the next day at no charge).  It offered good grip (hence the name) and the zytel actually feels warmer in the hand when dressing a deer with bare hands in -5 temps.  I cant think of a better hunting knife.  I do carry an old Gen 3 delica with FRN at work but it is a work knife and dont really care if it dont hold up.  It was cheaper at the time.  But for EDC I like G-10 or machined aluminum.  That heft makes it feel as if it will always last and be there when you need it.  Speaking of cool EDC blades, the Benchmade Seibert model is a beast yet the blade is under 3" making it a great edc knife.

If your thinking Spyderco, it might be a little pricey but there is almost no one that does not like the spyderco Sage, and you won't find a bad review on it. I have the Caly 3, which is somewhat similar but has a different lock. Great knife!

I've got the sage II and its as close to a spyderco and reverse collaboration you'll ever get. Quality craftsmanship and quality at half the price of a small sebenza.

But the Sage does not seem to come in a serrated or combo edge version?

I do really like the Sage though and may have to get one in the near future, however right now I am need of a combo edge blade.

Yes, you are correct, the Sage is plain edge only. You may be best to stick to your current suggestions if you want fully serrated or combo.

Does anyone have an opinion as to which blade steel they prefer?
I don't have any experience with VG-10, but I do very much like 154cm.
My understanding is that 154CM is a higher rated steel, but I might be mistaken.

As things stand for those people who have been following I am leaning fairly heavily toward the Spyderco Manix2 for a folder now.
