Does anyone have an opinion as to which blade steel they prefer?
I don't have any experience with VG-10, but I do very much like 154cm.
My understanding is that 154CM is a higher rated steel, but I might be mistaken.

As things stand for those people who have been following I am leaning fairly heavily toward the Spyderco Manix2 for a folder now.

154CM is a tougher steel so it's less likely to chip, but VG-10 is much easier to sharpen at the same hardness.  My preference is VG-10 for EDC, and 154CM for utility usage.

I do have some steels that I like, mostly because of ease of sharpening and edge retention but what I look for more is "who" makes them meaning the "Heat Treatments" they do. you can use a inexpensive steel and with good heat-treat come out with a very strong and durable blade.

It's all the steps they do to make steel stronger and less chipping/breaking that matters I feel.
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

They are quite similar but VG10 is finger grain, I could always get vg10 sharper than 154cm. VG10 is plenty tough, I've cut into staple with a 30° edge and it rolled with zero chip.

Yea, I was reviewing the Crucible data sheets and many of the steels have overlapping HRC, with the final hardness being determined by the heat treat/ temper. That being the case it is entirely possible to make an S30V blade poorly and have it "softer" than a 440c blade. (still very unlikely due to the high vanadium carbide content).
