I broke my first multi tool

Hello everyone, I am here to report that I broke my first multi tool.  The victum is my Leatherman Wave.  I broke it prying off the hubcaps on my 1994 Ford Escort.  Now the question is this, how do I get it repaired?  I bought it new on 5/24/10.  I also registered it with Leatherman.

And then he described doing something with it that it was not meant for.

He owned up to it right from the start.. I broke it.. as opposed to it broke.


Well done. Not enough of that going 'round. These days seems like everyday somebody goes and uses the knife blade to tuck point a chimney and then they say the steel sucks and won't hold an edge. Or they use the pliers to twist a piece of 1/2" rod iron and then complain that they must be made of "pot metal" when they snap.

Lovenhim, good for you. You broke it, and you admitted it. My hat is off to you.

LOL and thanks everyone.  Yes I did break it.  It gave no warning, no flex, just SNAP!.  I was touching up the stock 14inch hubcaps on my 1994 Ford Escort, so I thought I would use my trusty Wave.  Well I used it for something it was not made for and I broke it.  I will send it in, is there anything I should know first...like proof of purchase....or just send it to them?  I will remove the clip.

Leatherman's warranty covers tools up to 25 years.  The Wave hasn't been around for 25 years, so I doubt the receipt would help much!  They should know better than anyone that the tool isn't 25 years old yet! 

I would call Leatherman's Warranty department before sending it in to see if they have any specific instructions.  For the most part they want the items sent in by registered mail so if the tool goes missing it can be tracked and is insured.  I don't think that discounts you from getting service, but it means you are a little less screwed if the package gets lost.  So, call them first, and see what they require/suggest.

Second, when in that kind of a situation, try twisting the screwdriver rather than prying with it- you might have better luck, although you are indeed even better still to get some kind of pry tool for prying.

Are you saying that the little Pocket Wrench 2 that I have will work a a pry bar when needed for opening a paint can, taking off a car hubcap, etc and I will not damage it?  I ask because I know these tools are not as easy to find if damaged, so I do not use it much afraid I may damage it.  What are realistic jobs that the Pocket Wrench can do without harming it?

Well, it's a pretty thick piece of metal. If you need to do some real prying, maybe step up to a crowbar?

When I contacted Leatherman by email regarding a bent pocket clip on a knife, they specifically told me that they do not require any proof of purchase. Here is the reply I got from them when I inquired:

Thank you for contacting us regarding your Leatherman® tool.  All Leatherman® tools have a 25-year guarantee against defects in material and workmanship. Engraving of any kind is not covered under our warranty. This should be covered.

If your tool is not repairable, but has not been retired, it will be replaced with another tool of the same style. Should the tool be a retired model it will be replaced with the most comparable tool available.

Take any accessories off, I'd even take the removable bit off too. Don't send in the sheath either, just the raw tool and the broken part.

This page tells you everything you need to know. Ship via United Parcel Service or FedEx. Leatherman usually sends the tool back by US Snail Mail - with tracking. Best to make sure Leatherman gets your tool, don't risk it via snail mail.

As you know I think Pocket Wrenches are great 
The only way I can see anyone damaging one is to use it as a chisel and hit it with a hammer so if you manage to break yours I will personally send you one as a Christmas gift

Not too bad a price. Will add it to my ongoing wishlist.  

Where/when was I being naughty? Gave tools away to those that never had Leatherman, talked to neighbors that others said to stay away from cause they was bad news, helped my mom out, spoiled my cat even more, wrote a very nice review for NOSE Offense, and other things.

OT: When I had a Wave, I used the large screwdriver for all kinds of prying and was surprised at how well it held together.  I sold the Wave and recently bought a Charge ALX which as many of you know, does not have that large screwdriver.  As it turns out, I only miss it for prying so it's about as necessary as the can opener, IMO.

LM's warranty covers the tool, not the owner, so it doesn't matter if you find one on the side of the road and then it breaks, they will fix any and all defects.  They are really good about this, in my experience it only takes about a week to a week and a half and you have your tool back.  Congrats on finding a limitation, that knowledge will help you break less MT's in the future.  I recommend a MT.o Gerber shard for your keys no matter what, they are very useful and sold on EDCsource for a very reasonable price.
