Suggest me a chopper
on: November 01, 2010, 08:56:44 AM
No not a bike :D

I'm looking for a really good quality big chopping blade.  Something like a Machete or a Kukri - a big forward weighted knife.  Mainly used for gardening and outdoorsman style tasks like chopping through undergrowth.  I want a good one so I'm prepared to spend 300 dollars or more.

Any good suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers :)

I'd suggest a kukri of some sort - as will many others here.

With this you could go one of 2 routes, a traditional one (like from Tora blades) or the cool way  8) and go with something from Cold Steel.
I'm back!!

Ranger! anything in the RD series. Ontario makes them now (but still full warranty)
and I beat the double-tooth-picks outta mine (batoning with a rock) and
just got a few med-dings and nicks in it! (only on the back where I hit it)

and they fixed it up for me free! I was dumb but all I had at the time.
but it convinces me what a blade! I got an RD7 ;)

I am 100% with WhichDawg.......get a Ranger. Any of the RD Series (Ready Detachment), to include the Nightstalker and Bush series. These are workhorse knives. Now that they are being made by Ontario the prices are even lower, but they are still as good. Although if you can I highly recommend getting one made by the man himself.

Here's some links to some of the Ontario built Rangers.........

RD Series: http://www.chestnutridgeknifeshop.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=66&osCsid=4c2ce3d7cf0529ac338969a863ff30fc

Some of the Nightstalkers: http://www.chestnutridgeknifeshop.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=67&osCsid=4c2ce3d7cf0529ac338969a863ff30fc

Bush Series RD's: http://www.chestnutridgeknifeshop.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=79&osCsid=4c2ce3d7cf0529ac338969a863ff30fc

And here's a link to some more: http://www.knivesshipfree.com/Ranger-Knives

In the RD's the RD-7 or RD-9 should do you well.

I am partial to the RD-7's myself, particularly Recurved..........

If you are looking for a large outdoors/gardening use blade I will have to go against the common theme and suggest that you get a machete. Also I would not be overly concerned with the steel type and other such things.

My machete sees regular heavy use and performs quite well, but I just couldn't justify spending a large amount of money on a tool that gets so beat up. When I am clearing brush I have a tendency to hit a few rocks and other such things that a blade is not meant to come in contact with. I sharpen it frequently on a grinder and don't worry too much about the nicks in the blade.
If I had spent a significant amount of money on it, the tool performance would not have improved dramatically and I would simply be out that much more money. As things stand when the blade is worn out I can simply discard and replace it.

That being said I can honestly admit that I have never actually handled a kukri so I cannot tell if it would be better suited to the garden variety tasks.

My machete is a $15 corona blade.
