Multitasker Tools.
on: November 01, 2010, 05:17:24 PM
I just received earlier today, a shipment from Shane, the President of Multitasker. The package contained 2 TUBEs, 1 TUBE expansion kit, 1 Ultralight, 1 Series 2.1 Multitasker, and another item that will remain underwraps for now.

I am thinking this will be an everything I have on Multitasker kind of thread. So grab some popcorn, relax, and enjoy.

Multitasker packaging was always understated and very tastefully done. As an added incentive, it looked rather green. There is a new shift in the packaging for the Multitasker TUBE. Cellophane windows in a fancy gray  packaging. It is quite different from the Multitasker and Multitasker Ultralight in appearance, package wise.

Also of note, the packaging for the series 1 and series 2 Multitaskers also differ in both size and information on the packaging. The series 2 packaging is labeled as such.

Multitasker TUBE
Here we see both TUBE tools and the expansion kit in the center.

The back of the packaging.

The TUBE expansion kit is rather nice. It consists of a hard clam shell case with various tool attachment points on one side for various cleaning bits, etc. On the other side, you have room for an OTIS bore snake and a few other things you might want to include. The whole thing is held closed by a zipper, meaning you can fill it up with other items you might need in the field and it won’t open up on you.

On top of that, the expansion kit also comes with a set of useful bits.

The Multitasker TUBE is an interesting tool in that it contains quite a bit of functionality into such a small form factor.  It is pen shape with two end caps that come off. One side, you have a regular bit holder, and on the other end, a threaded brass pick. Now the pick screws off, and allows you to use the TUBE with an OTIS Bore snake or other OTIS cleaning tools.

The TUBE comes with the pick, a sight tool, and a carbon scraper. Add the expansion kit and you have a very functional tool in a small enough package to carry around in a Backpack. The Expansion kit is too large to hang off your belt, and does not come with a belt loop.

Shane was kind enough to send me the tan version which is not standard I think, and the more common black Version. Her you see the bit holder end.

And the pick end unscrewed ready for an OTIS snake or some other tool.

And the carbon scraper attached.

Multitasker Ultralight
The Ultralight comes with a sheath, and it is made very similar to the Series 2 Multitaskers, but only smaller to fit the tool. As some of you may already know, Shane was very kind to send me 3 of his Ultralight prototypes a while back. I am very happy to get the final production tool.

Here is the final product compared to its prototypes.

Now the Ultralight is a little larger than the TUBE, but contains 4 tools along with the OTIS attachment points that the newer Multitaskers include. Now I am no shooter, and I don’t own any firearms, but I can see that mating one of these to an OTIS kit is a grand way of making the Multiasker that much more versatile multi-tool.

The Ultralight comes with a brass pick, a carbon scraper, a sight adjustment tool and screwdriver bit holder, and a spanner wrench. The pick is once again removable for OTIS attachments. The tool also comes with a built in pocket clip if you decide to not use the included sheath.

The sight adjustment tool and spanner wrench lock. Each of these tools have their own separate locking lever. The levers are well made and nicely ergonomic. I have big fingers, and I didn’t find them obtrusive or hard to engage and disengage.

The carbon scrapper gets a liner lock, as does the pick.

AR Multitasker
The plier based Multitasker is now in its second revision series. Currently, I know of 3 tools, a series 1.0, and the second generation tool which is now in its second revision. Thus, a series 2.0 and 2.1 to be exact. Knowing Shane, there could very well be a series 2.2 planned. Multitasker is always striving to improve their multi-tools, something that is admirable in this day and age.

The series 1 and 2 sheaths are very different. The series one sheath is nice, but the harder more shaped series 2 sheaths feel a lot better. Because it is shaped, it makes accessing and storing the tool a better end user experience,

From left to right: AR Multitasker 1.0, 2.0, and 2.1.

If you compare the series 1 to series 2, you will not that there are many improvements. The older Multitasker had 2 tools that stuck out when folded, making the tool feel a bit awkward. Once opened, those tools did fold in more. This was due to the plier head pushing them out of the way when closed. The Series 2 fixed that, and also added the removable pick and OTIS attachment point, and also various minor improvements…

…such as the cutout on the bottom handle for the sight tool to give more room.

Also worth mentioning, the pliers are CNC machined from billeted tool steel and finished with a durable coating. Here is a great example of how Multasker is always striving to improve their products. Series 2.0 has cutters that go past each other, very much like the series 1.0. Series 2.1 on the other hand, has ball bearings around the pivot point, and the cutters butt against each other to improve wire cutting.

I may not have any firearms at my house, but I did buy an OTIS kit because it came with a BO MP600 Gerber.  I can say that the Multitasker is a better fit for the OTIS kit because any of the newer tools, be it a TUBE, Ultralight, or AR Multitasker series 2, will act as a handle for your cleaning kit. This is something the Gerber did not do.

The AR Multitasker fits nicely with the OTIS kit.

Here, the OTIS bore snake is screwed onto the AR Multitasker along with one of the various bore copper brushes.

I must say, I am impressed with each of the Multitasker tools. They all feel of high quality, and their build construction and attention to detail only reinforces that. I like how the AR Multitaskers and the Ultralight have brass washers at all pivot points. This is something you don’t see much of anymore. The fit and finish is fantastic.

Well I guess that sums up this quick little jaunt into Multasker goodness. I hope you enjoyed this little side trip.

Well I know little to nothing about the requirements of firearms owners, but they sure look like they are up to the job  :tu:

Definitely think they should go for a civilian tool though. With that quality, I think the right toolset would be a winner.

I agree. A regular non weapons centric MT would be grand.

Mind you, the Multitasker, much like the MUT in another thread, doesn’t have to be used solely as the purview of gun owners. You can use the spanner wrench as a bottle opener. A pick is always useful. The scraper could be put to other uses I suppose. There is a bit driver and that is universal in applications. You don't have to use the sight adjuster as it is removable. The blade is nice and sharp, and the pliers are very good on the version 2.1 with those ball bearings around the pivot point. The wire cutter is even improved. Best of all, the G10 handles are slip resistant and very comfortable in the hands. They don't get cold like the stainless steel multi-tools do out there in colder weather.

Chako, would it be too much trouble to take a couple of pics comparing the size of the 2.1 to a common control MT like a Wave, Surge, or Spirit?  I've no real sense of the size of these tools, or little details like how far the new ball-bearing jaws open and such.  It would be much appreciated!

I was gifted a very nice special knife. I am told only 20 of these made. Ti framelock and ceramic blade. Isn't it beautiful? :salute:

I love the pivot point tie in with the Series 2 AR Multitasker.

Thank you for the pics Chako.  That puts the MT pliers in perspective...and makes them all the more impressive.  Damn, they're thick in the middle!

And wow...that's a seriously cool knife.  Ceramic blade...

It's amazing that they fit pliers that are basically Surge sized in a Wave sized tool.

I'm not sure what retail is, I know the same company that makes his is also making them for another place called stone river ceramics or something. I think they run somewhere between 60 and 80 bucks, which is good for a ceramic/titanium framelock.

Titanium framelock with a ceramic blade? For around 60-80 bucks? Wow. Any links?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. $120 looks pretty much exactly the same as the Multitasker including that pivot. Very nice. May have to go on the X-mas list. Actually, Amazon has 'em for just under $100. It's a lighter color and has a different lanyard hole than the multitasker, but very clearly the same knife. Looks very nice. Chako, when closed does the blade hit the back of the liner at all? That's kinda sketchy to be slamming a ceramic blade into the metal like that.

Great pics, thanks!

Shane,

Those all look fantastic. I really like the Ultralight. Sign me up for a Multitasker EDC for sure.

No, the blade comes nowhere near the frame.

As for sale, I don't think so. Only a limited run of 20 from what I understand.

Your not slamming the ceramic blade into the stop pin if you take it slow. I did lube mine up and I can flick it like and one handed knife with speed but I wont do it to this. I'm still scared about the time when I have to sharpen it.

At first I thought it would be cool for him to have an S30V framelock but it just wouldn't fit the whole mutitasker thing about being special and different than everyone else. By it being a ceramic titanium mix it's different than the run of the mill tactical folder and stands out in a crowd.
