Got me a Wii this week...
on: November 02, 2010, 10:26:39 PM
...and I can honestly say I have never had so much fun on a computer.  :D

Question is, we got the sports games, but anyone got any good recommendations for games suitable for the whole family including young children?  Bowling is currenly very popular, but won't last forever.

Sports Resort has more (similar/fun) games... but you also have to get the motionplus thingie...

IMHO Sports resort frisbee golf > normal golf and the bowling is also mucho better.

I find any of the Raving Rabbids games hilarious and fun for all...

I also really enjoy the Super Mario Bros Wii... mainly for nostalgia reasons, but it is fun...

Nice one  :tu:

We've got one as well. A definite favourite with younger and older children. Even grandparents can manage it as well :D

We got the Wii Fit board as well which adds a whole new aspect to the console

It's no Xbox or PS3 but then it doesn't pretend to be. It goes to show it's not all about stunning graphics, etc. One of the best games I've played was Resident Evil 4 on the Wii  :tu:

If you're into shooting Los Ganados then definitely give it a try  :D

My youngest son got a Wii 2 weeks ago for his birthday and being a PS3 player myself I must say I am pleasantly surprised.
Bowling is great fun for the whole family indeed, and I must say that I also like archery and table tennis.

We also got the Wii party Disc and although these games aren't as pretty as the sports games (and a lot shorter, most of these games only take like 1 minute or so), some of them are real fun, like Bobsleigh Highway, or Pop Coaster (shooting balloons while sitting in a rollercoaster).  Like I said, non of these games look as good as the ones from the sports games, but there are more than 80 games on this disc so there's bound to be something you like on it.

I must say I'm also looking for something new on the Wii, a real game instead of these 20 games on 1 disc series, so I'm hoping to read some suggestions here  ;).

I have a disk called Wii Play, which comes with some good child oriented games, such as cow racing, balloon shooting and some other basics.  I got it with the spare Wiimote I wanted:

It was the same price with the game as a spare Wiimote would be without it, so naturally I opted for it!

For something a bit more adult, I just had a couple of fun nights with Star Wars: Force Unleashed II, which I thought was very well done.

I also have Mario and Sonic's Winter Olympics, which is very much like Sports and Sports Resort.  I tend to stick mostly to those kinds of games myself, as I'm not really fond of playing more "standard" type games on this machine.

I mean, it's the first real motion controlled game system out there- why the heck would you want to play normal games on it?  :D

Oh, and my nephew was big into Super Mario Kart- so much so that my brother and his wife had to hide the disk since he would wake up in the middle of the night to play it, often dragging his younger brother out of bed to watch.

Yeah, I was going to say Mario Kart and Boom Blox (1&2) and I also have Wii Play that comes with the extra remote.

I haven't even bothered looking at newer games since Super Mario Wii came out. (Mainly because our Wii has been unused)

My brother bought prince of persia which was great fun.  Not so much a family game but brilliant fun with the WII control system.

I've played mariokart as well and they is awesome fun :D

We got one last Christmas, mainly for the kids as I'm more an Xbox gamer <nerd alert>. Best games that we have:

Mario Party
Good fun, like a virtual boardgame with loads of short mini games. Dead easy for the kids (ours are between 5 and 9 by the way)
Raving Rabbids
Someone was doing some serious drugs when they coded this one! Probably one for the slightly older crowd as the controls can be a bit fiddly for youngsters. Excellent fun though
Lego Star Wars/Lego Indiana Jones
Good mix of action and puzzles. I play these with my eldest daughter and we ususally come up with a solution one way or another (haven't had to resort to cheating yet!)

yep, Raving Rabbids games are a blast...

The lego ones are great imho if you try to get everything (which means running through levels several times!)

Zack & Wiki is also another great puzzle solver, although more of a one person game... (have played with 4 people suggesting solutions...)

Seems I need to look into the Mario games.  Already had Mario kart on my list (for me  :D) but didn't know about the party one.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you looked into all of the "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero" games?
They're the ones where you play the guitar using the special guitar-like remote.
It's a lot of fun!

My daughter loves playing on the Wii at her after school club and I just know it's going to appear on her Santa list (it's going to be a long shot though).  My concern is that all the games I've seen seem to be very 'cutise', not a problem for her, but not really my thing. ::)
Other than sports games is there really some decent stuff aimed at adult males?  Prince of Persia and Resident Evil sound promising, so are there plenty of others in the same vein?

Wario Ware Smooth Moves is a great game. It's lots of 5-15 second games and gets faster as you go along. Great for little kids learning to use the wiimote and really good fun as a family taking turns as age plays no part in understanding or ability. Very silly and fun.

For you and your stress levels: Endless Ocean. Controls maybe a bit sensitive for the kids but it makes me completely relaxed within 3 minutes of playing it - scuba diving and locating stuff underwater. Beautiful graphics. Best after a long day.

Any of the Lego character games (Stars wars, indiana jones etc) The older you are the more you get out of the game - you see different things and can take on different challenges. Little kids have great fun blowing things up (into lego pieces) and running around like crazy. No skill needed for that bit :o) Guess what I do mostly :o)

I can also recommend the EA Sports Active Personal Trainer. For those of us who like to exercise in private and can;t afford a personal trainer, it's great. I have the first and second disks and like them both. They can get quite challenging and were harder than I expected them to be (especially if you add wrist and ankle weights)

Another vote for Mario Kart too :) I can;t do it for toffee but it's great fun and good for the whole family.

Wiiplay as Def said gives you another wiimote but it also contains simple games to teach you how to use the Wiimote. useful if you've never played a wii before.

Ravin Rabbids TV Party is fab! My favourite is the sledging that you do by sitting on the Wii fit and controlling it with your bum :) On the screen you are actually sat on an upsidedown yak :) Very silly.

The games you get with your Wii fit are also pretty good as family games and great for the kids balance (as has been said before) hoolahooping is silly and fun.

Hope that helps :)
I

Awesome games.... you actually use the Wiimote and nunchuk to their full potential to use all the Jedi powers you can think of.

Ok after looking into it a bit we are going to grab the Wii Party with the contoller thingy.

I have a question though, cos we got some special black Wii Sports pack thingy, it seems that the remote I have has the motionplus thingy on it already.  Do we need another one of these or not?  Are they worth grabbing? (WTF do they actually do? )

I used to be so up to speed on all this.  :(

The Motion Plus is an additional accelerometer/sensor that attaches to a Wiimote that doesn't already have it.  Some games use it, some don't.  It provides more motion info to the console, allowing for more precise control.  If you have Wiimotes with it built in, great.  If you have older Wiimotes without them, try to get games that come with them, since you won't be able to use the older controller with games that are looking for it, unless you have it attached.  You can buy them separately, or you can buy them with games, or you can buy new controllers that have Motion Plus built in, but if a game says it needs Motion Plus, you will need to have it on every Wiimote you want to play with.  You can, however leave it on for convenience sake, even when playing games that don't require it.  I leave mine on all the time and the nunchuk plugs right into it.

I hope that makes some sense...
