Polls polls and more polls!
on: November 09, 2010, 09:34:51 AM
Alright, well, now that a week (or so) has passed since I opened the polls I posted, I'm going to shut them down and offer some reasoning.

As I stated before, I'm doing a major consultation project for a company moving in to the retail supply side of the sporting knife industry, and I thought I'd share a little tidbit of information that drove these questions, and something I'm sure a lot of MT.O users up here in little Canadia may have already suspected.

There are no sporting knife or multitool wholesalers in Canada.

Let me say that again, with some more details.

There are no sporting knife or multitool wholesalers in Canada, with a population of 30M+ people and an ingrained culture of hunting, fishing and outdoorsmanship.

This one fact is the reason that retail prices in Canada for knives and multitools is often MSRP + 10-20%.  The reason behind this is law - the laws in Canada regarding knives, blades and concealed weapons is so murky that the time to cross the border because of Customs delays is almost impossible to determine.  As anyone who's ever run a business would know, the inability to determine lead time on products for general retail sale is a business killer, an absolute killer.  Current order lead times are in excess of three months for the retailers I'm working with right now, and a number of them stopped doing orders for Christmas on October 10-12th, simply because for sporting knives and multitools, there's absolutely no way for them to guarantee having them in stock in time otherwise.

Now, I'm sure this is a problem for many places in the world, but I find it absolutely insane that in Canada, a stone's throw a way from a ton of major manufacturers (Gerber, Spyderco, Leatherman, Kershaw to name a few), haven't figured it out yet.

Actually, there's one company that's figured it out, it's Vancouver-based, I'm 100% sure that any Vancouver or BC-based member will know who it is, and up until now, they've not dealt with multitools.

Crazy, crazy world.

Hell of a project there my friend, best wishes on it's success.

Tragic that there are no wholesalers up there, I figured you guys would have it as easy as us down here being that you're on the same smurfing continent!  But, knife laws are stupid everywhere I guess(poor brits).  We aren't allowed to carry assisted openers here, but they still sell them everywhere and all the workers at the stores think it's ok to carry them and will tell you so(they are very wrong).

Anyway, good luck!

They're getting the entire Leatherman knife and tool lineup this month.  I love this place and must visit them one day.  Not sure when I'll visit BC though...
This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

As far as the law is concerned, any knife that has a spring open of any kind is prohibited.  As to whether or not the popo will harass you for it, that is case by case.  I have been told that I could get away with it if I didn't pull it out in a dangerous situation(duh!) but I prefer not to risk it.
