Who carries a manpurse?
on: November 12, 2010, 10:56:40 PM
Just wondering. I just got my newest bag in today, a Maxped jumbo in black. Its not my first, I've had one in tan and also a fatboy in black. The fatboy was too small and I traded the other jumbo for a pygmy falcon so I could carry my laptop. I decided to simplify because me regular backpack is too big and I usually just leave it at home, defeating the purpose of an edc bag. I may add a maxped janus later on and I will definitely add a few pouches for my crunch and flashlight. Who else likes bags?

I like bags, though I have done well to keep my limit to two "general use" bags - one is a wonderful Columbia Sportswear Company backpack that's no longer made, while the other is a Rothco messenger bag.  I do, however, have two spare backpacks that, I believe, are also Columbia Sportswear, though they're back home and waiting for one of my current bags to die.  Given how long these two have lasted compared to my past bags - which normally went KIA in a year's time - I don't see that happening anytime soon. :tu:

With that said, I wouldn't mind a nice TimBuk2 one of these days.

I would if I could afford a decent one worth buying that'll last a good long while, but haven't been able to justify it....yet.

I've carried a bag for years now, nothing fancy just variations on messenger bags.

one in leather I picket up in a yard sale:

Simple canvas bag (ignore the hatchet that's not EDC )

I don’t carry a purse, I carry a urban tactical transportation device with urban tactical survival gear inside.

I carry a Timbuk2 messenger bag.  Super handy and water proof(ish).  I prefer a messenger bag over a backpack for day to day urban use.

Gareth, that's an awesome messenger bag. :tu:

Great isn't it?  I picket it up for about £4, mostly 'cos I was looking for some leather to make a sheath with.  Got it home and realised it was just a cracking good bag.  Mind you it's a heavy beast all on it's own, so can end up being far to weighty to happily carried about.

My GF doesn't even own a purse, just carries a wallet. I want to buy a "manpurse". There's just something inherently backwards about that.

Gareth, smurfing awesome bag my friend.  I would gladly trade something for that if you ever want to get rid of it.

Exactly!  That's what I try to tell folks but my good buds keep messing with me over it.  They think it's stupid to carry a sling bag because it looks like a purse, but they say this while they strap their backpacks on.  What's the difference between a backpack and a sling pack when it comes to carrying a small amount of urban survival gear?

Me too.  The backpack is too big, and everything falls to the bottom so you end up digging more than you would in a messenger bag, especially one from Maxp.

Another example of the difference in UK and US English, here a purse is what she keeps her money, change, credit cards etc in, not a big bag.

So this:

Not this:

BTW if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. :D

So what you guys call a purse, we call a large wallet. Interesting, now I can make fun of my GF who insists she will never carry a purse, but it turns out she already does :)

Pretty much.  basically here wallet=money carrier for men, purse=money carrier designed for women.

So yes, there's a good chance that according to us Brits your girlfriend already carries a purse.

I carry a work bag back and forth to work.  I want to carry one at other times, but sadly it just wouldn't look right around here.

I couldn't manage without my man-bag now.

I don't know how I got through the first 40 years of my life without one tbh.
I used to come here a lot.

See my problem with getting one is I can't decide what type. Something like a MaxP Fatboy would be awesome for EDC and easily justifiable to the female unit since I could, and would, use it as a camera bag, problem is I don't have like $90 to spend on one. On the other hand a larger one like a BOB I can get large enough for my laptop (17") and possibly for less money, but would never carry something that large as EDC, but I really do need something new to haul the lappy around in. If I could find something similar in size, functionality, and most importantly quality to the Fatboy for less money I'd probably be all over it.

For one, the Fatboy is too small, you need something the size of the jumbo for EDC imo.  There are jumbo knockoffs on sale on amazon for around 30 bucks.

I didn't find this out until after I bought this last one, or I would have hopped on it.

Actually, I'm looking at the Thermite right now. The jumbo is honetly too big for anything I'd carry on an EDC basis, I don't carry much. In fact with the exception of my camera I can fit it all in my jeans pockets. The Thermite's main pocket looks to be about the right size for my camera (I carry it in a Nite-Ize Multi Pock-its now), I can get some spare batteries and maybe a small first-aid set-up in the front pocket. My flashlight can finally get out of my pocket and into one of the side pouches, drop either my Spirit or Powerlock into the other one. Back pocket maybe a notebook or something. Toss in a pen or two and it about covers it. I keep my phone on vibrate so it would stay in my pocket, and I would rather keep my wallet in pocket as well. The standard Fatboy is honestly a lot more attractive to me in many ways, but I honestly just don't need that much space. If I had the space I'd wind up feeling the need to fill it all and make the thing annoyingly heavy. Not to mention the smaller size of the Thermite looks a bit more discreet, and having multiple wear options (shoulder or waist) is nice depending on what I'm doing that day. Best part is that since it can be had for around $30 and my birthday is next week.....

Depends on how you plan to carry it.  The thermite is a waist pack so I wouldn't like it much.  I like the sling bag.  I really wish I had looked at the Noatak a little more, because it looks pretty sweet.

Yeah, but it's designed to be used as a shoulder sling as well, I like options. I may have to add some sort of padding to the strap but that's no biggie.

To confirm - you can use the Thermite perfectly well as a shoulder carried bag, although I'd advise spending the extra few bucks on the shoulder pad if you plan on putting any serious weight in it.

I used a Thermite happily for over a year before "upgrading" to a Fatboy and then the Jumbo. One thing to bear in mind with the Thermite though is that there's no molle webbing, so what you get is basically what you get - adding capacity isn't as simple as with the bigger bags.

I'm at a strange place, where the Fatboy is a little too small, but the Jumbo is a bit bigger than I need. But you don't have to fill it, and the extra manoeuvring room when you're rooting around for something can actually be a plus. I also love the water bottle pouch on the Jumbo, it holds a 500ml or 1l Sigg bottle equally well and has saved me a fortune in drinks bought!

Any of the three would make great camera bags.

As to the cost, I think the old adage that "you get what you pay for" holds very true with bags. A Maxpedition bag is more of an investment in my eyes, just like a quality multitool. My Maxped bags will all still be functional when I'm worm food.

I used to come here a lot.

Yeah I agree on the quality, that's why I haven't given the UTG fatboy clone much thought. Considered it, but decided I'd rather have a smaller higher quality bag, than take short cuts for the bigger one. I don't normally carry a water bottle, but I've been considering changing my mind on that, however I saw in one youtube review a decent sized bottle can fit in the back most pocket pretty easily. Sure it intrudes on the main pocket but looking at the dimensions that wouldn't affect my uses all that much, especially if I were to get a smaller, flatter bottle. No biggie. The lack of MOLLE webbing isn't an issue for me. Sure, it's certainly be nice, but frankly I have nothing MOLLE compatible that I would stick on there either.

Also, I *may* have just gotten off the phone with my G/F, at which time I *may* have more than hinted that I *may* want one for my birthday next week, and *may* have also gone so far as to specify my preferred color  >:D

Yep. I just think the Fatboy would be bulky enough that I would wind up never actually using it. Hell, the Thermite may bug me. I think for the trade-offs the Thermite just suits my needs better. If I'm out hiking and need to carry more I have other ways to do it. For what little I carry EDC (compared to other forum members, it's still way more than the average person lol) I think the Thermite will work out just fine.
