Victorinox "Special" Mechanic
on: November 14, 2010, 06:18:27 PM
Here's one of my Vic pride and joys, the "Special" Mechanic. I don't think this model has an actual name, it was a variant made up for the electronics chain Radio Shack. It's affectionately referred to as the Special Mechanic. The Radio Shack name for these were "TechLine" and it's labeled on the handle scale.

This is the slimmest full size Vic to feature the pliers. The tool arrangement makes a lot of sense, I can't imagine whey they never offered this model in their actual lineup.

The tools include- main blade, combo-tool (cap lifter, can opener, flathead screwdriver, wire stripper/bender), pliers with wire cutters, phillips screwdriver, toothpick, tweezer & inkpen.

A lot of functions in a two layer SAK!  Here are a couple pics.  The scales are a little scuffed up, but it doesn't bother me at all.

An uncommon but practical tool :tu:

If you want to give the scales a bit of a clean up but not lose its character marks try rubbing with Brasso or similar metal polish followed by a good wash with warm (not hot) soapy water.

And welcome to the forum
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I've also heard these referred to as Junior Mechanics but, as you say, I don't think it was ever an official name.  Cool SAK though, whatever you want to call it. :)

There is also evidence of it being called the "Promark," according to the RadioShack blister package; Mechanic Jr., Junior Mechanic, and Special Mechanic are also all contenders, as Gareth, et al. have mentioned. :tu:

I've seen that on other Radio Shack packaging, so I think its safe to assume that's not a name for the knife.

Very nice, Roger. It always amazes me how much the combo tool can save on space -- especially when you add in a beefy tool like the pliers. Growing up with a small Tinker as my "go to" pocket knife has me seeing the norm as the cap lifter and can opener always as separate tools in one layer.

Add a pair of scissors to this one and you'd have a model to reckon with.

It seems this model is still available, but unfortunately this shop does not sell to ultimate consumers. Here is a link to the german homepage:

http://www.meyer-shop.com/item/1020400/102/0/37299/meyerbindezangentool.html

It`s called "Bindenzangentool" and the tool-combination was chosen for the repair and the maintenance of some kind of special plier.

Now that site is just crazy.

I agree Mr.W, if you're messing with the flora you need a saw  :tu:

A Pioneer Harvester is my favourite for such things (although I probably need a stick some scissors in there too :D)

If only someone in Germany could organize a group buy on these.  I'd get several!

That's a great idea for a group buy, I need a couple.

I'll also mention; as noted above "Promark" is not a contendor for the name of the knife it's just a RadioShack trade name.  I'll add the same is true for 'Techline', that is just a tradename they uses on anything they wanted.

We should get this knife, then Neil would be busy adding scissors to a few. I could also see adding a single bit-driver layer would be pretty cool.

I wonder if any of the vendors could see if Victorinox would be interested in a special run of knives?  I wonder how those ever get organized.  Things like the Master Electrician (http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/neilstools/Victorinox/master-electrician-1.jpg).  How does those come to pass?

That has got to be the most efficient tool layout I have ever seen. It's boggling that it isn't offered as a standard tool. Hell make it in alox, lose the T&T/pen but that would be a ridiculous amount of functionality in a practically non-existent size. All it really needs is scissors. I love it.
