Click on the pics for the big versions...
Here's another picture of that Swiss Lighter as requested, it has Waldorf Swiss and the Swiss cross on its bum:

Here's a group shot of my recent car boot lighters (well the ones I've got working ;) )

There's a mini Zippo, the Swiss one from above, an Imco Junior and the black one is a gas Colibri.  As is the nature of car boot sales, the new in box Colibri cost me the same as the used Imco :)

I don't collect lighters, I just loose them a lot, so it makes sense to have a little stash :D

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Its a bit of a brick :)  It weighs twice as much as the slightly larger Imco!  It does have a certain rugged appeal to it though.

I was many steps closer because of you though.  :D

When I was looking into lighters, I actually started off looking for one like that (grandad had one), but then I "discovered" trench art and went off at a tangent.

I always laughed at the original Star Trek.  They had a "racially and ethnically balanced" crew, and yet all of the aliens they encountered were based on the various ethnicities of Earth in the 1960's.

The Klingons were the Russians- powerful, harsh, unpredictable.  The biggest threat, held in check by a grudging, paper thin handshake agreement and mutual terror over what could happen if someone opened fire.

The Vulcans were the Japanese- logical, emotionless and industrious, with an intellectual culture that included many temples, gods and robes.

The Romulans were the friendly Japane... uh I mean Vulcan's distantly related, warlike cousins who were irrational and would attack just about anything given the chance.  Which, coincidentally enough was how most folks viewed the Chinese at the time.

The Andorians were loose cannons who appeared and disappeared as they wanted, were up to just about any job if the price was right, but were just as likely to kill you as anyone else, which was exactly how the Middle East was viewed at the time.

It was also amusing that while there were no Canadians on any of the Enterprises (or Voyager, or DS9!) that the rugged, All American Iowa farmboy captian was Canadian, as was the Scottish engineer! :P

And, as if that wasn't funny enough, James Doohan, aka Scotty used to hide the fact that he was missing a finger on his right hand.  Frankly I can't help but think that a four fingered hand would have helped his image as a no olds barred, old school ship's engineer!

Not quite as funny as when they first launched the Next Generation Enterprise and the pilot was a blind guy.  I suppose it made sense to transfer him to engineering so someone else could steer...

Def

Your analysis of the original Star Trek is spot on.

However, given the time and conditions under which it was made, I think Rodenberry did a pretty good job with it.

There were a few excellent episodes, a lot of decent episodes, but unfortunately lots of embarassingly cheesy episodes as time went on.

IIRC, Doohan's finger was shot off during WW2.

Scotty, Spock, and Bones were my favorites - really distinctive characters that were always interesting.

I never cared much for Kirk.

Now that I think of it, you're probably right.

After Kirk began hitting on the guest babe in each new episode, the show did suffer a rapid decline in quality.
