Broken Waves
on: October 08, 2007, 03:34:25 AM
These two are nasty. :P
I got them from an aquaintence, obviously they've been used hard. In addition to the black, sticky gunk in every nook, they are both peppered with dings and gouges. The pliers jaws themselves are chewed up bad. One has a broken serrated blade and a broken small screwdriver. The other is missing its diamond file. Most all of the other blades look rough.

So, into the mail they go and tomorrow it's off to Portland with the both of them. We'll see what Tim's people have to say about them.  :-\

Those nice broken blades are a testament to why you shouldn't pry with a knife!

Def you are absoluttly right on. When those blades snap they fly like a bullett. I would be interested if they do fix them.(I am sure they will) but they definatly were abused. ::)

If that Wave was not for collection but at least the original owner should have used it properly . For me, it is cardinal sin number 1 to use the pliers as a hammer and/or using the knife to pry. A tool will last forever if use properly, cleaning it after use, and oil it regularly.

And lastly…. use the right tool for the right job.

Being a Wave lover/user myself, I both cringe AND revel at the sight of those two tools.  Yes they were obviously abused.  However, the fact that they are all beat up means that someone USED them, which is what these tools were designed to do.  Were they used correctly?  Probably not.  However, they were not babied and protected either.

This is very true. The dents and gouges and worn serrations on the pliers are testimony to a hard life. Neither of these tools were weekend warriors. My guess is they got used out in the "real world" every day, by a truck mechanic or an oilfield worker or the like. In that type of environment, breakage is going to happen sooner or later.

As regards warranty, I sent along a note asking that the tools be repaired, if possible. If repair is not an option, I asked that they be replaced with two original style Waves, assuming Leatherman still has a stash.

Exactly one month to the day since I sent these two out, they are back! Oops, except they are not the same two I sent in for warranty. Apparently Leatherman has discarded the two beat-up Waves I sent them, and gave me these two as replacements.

Great service!!

There is no sign anywhere on the pliers or handles or blades that either of these two has ever been used. Date stamps are from 1998, so apparently Leatherman still has a stash of original Waves. Which is fine by me!!

Although there is something not quite right about one. Take a close look. Can you see the problem?  ;)

Looks like an awful lot of flatheads on one...

Maybe you should send it in for a warranty replacement!   :pok:

What are you going to do about it ???

I've sort of taken a fancy to the double-scissors one. I think it will make a great conversation piece. (Would have been even better if it had double-knives and double-diamond files!)  :D

Usually they do- the few dollars they'd spend on shipping goes a long way to ensuring a lifelong customer.

Better than risking upsetting someone over the cost of a stamp anyway!
