Victorinox 1980s display case
on: December 04, 2010, 04:47:21 PM
 :mail:

I received this nice display case today. I believe it's from the 1980s, but I'm not sure about its exact age. All scissors have a screw and there is a SwissChamp, so it's from between 1986 and 1991 if I'm correct ;)

The case rotates on a round base and contains 15 SAKs (including a Grand Prix that I had on my wish list), a leash and a Zermatt pouch. On one side of the case is a list of knives with their prices (in USD), on the other side is a list of all available tools.

Pics:

The case is still sealed and all knives are mint  8)

VERY nice!

Do you know if those price stickers were added recently?  That seems like high prices for the 80's, since they seem to be comparable to prices now in many cases.

What is that on the side of the Zermatt pouch?  Maybe a sharpener?

That's fantastic mate.  If I'm right and that's a 91mm Golfer, I think that pushes the date up to the later 80's.  I seem to remember reading 1987+ but I can't be sure.

That's a very nice one, with the wood finish and everything.  I have a slightly earlier one with a Champion, but it's just ally plexy glass, I've been thinking about picking up a couple more, but finding room for them can be hard.

Really nice bonus those prices on the side as well!

Bump! :P

is the temptation of cracking it open to play with the saks overbearing yet? :pok: :D

Well... my wife tried to crack it open the moment she saw it :D
She doesn't understand why I want to keep the thing closed and the SAKs untouched :)

That's really cool :tu:  Do you have a spot picked out for displaying it?

Not really... the boss my wife (again ;) ) does not allow it to be in the living room. So it's standing on my computer desk at the moment (the display case, not my wife ;) ).

Do you know if those price stickers were added recently?  That seems like high prices for the 80's, since they seem to be comparable to prices now in many cases.

I really don't know. As you can see, the prices are written on stickers, not on the case itself. So the prices could be added/changed relatively recently.

By the way, the case was listed on the VSAKCS classifieds page. Apparently everyone missed the ad? ;)

Oh and I wonder if the springs are the same as on regular knives. Look at the SwissChamp: you could never open the reamer/awl like that on a new SAK. It would snap closed :)

This is one of my display cases.  It has a plexiglass rotating base, but I've removed it since it was missing screws and made it harder to store.  I'll fix it up one day.

I have a 108mm display case like that one.

Safari Display

The case itself is completely intact but the saws have snapped in in a few of the knives.

I don't know- the thing is sealed.  I have no desire to crack it open, since i have all those knives (except the stag) already to play with.

Did the 108mm authentic stag scales have rivets?  That one looks like the plastic-scaled Hunter I had, except mine had the serrated gutter.  I HATED those scales, and now that knife has Scibeer bead-blasted G10.

Def, that display has to be pretty rare, huh?  I don't remember ever seeing 108mm knives displayed when I was a kid.

Ya the authentic Stag has 2 exposed rivets, it quite easy to spot the imitation stag it's not a very good imitation. SAKwiki has images of both.
