Différences in BO finish ?
on: March 29, 2026, 06:51:06 PM
I have two BO LM : a Fuse, and a PST.

The aspect is not the same for those two MT.
The Fuse looks matte, and the PST looks brilliant.

Do you know if there are différent kind of BO finish ?

Here are both tools, without flash :

And the PST, with flash :

Any idea, someone ?

Thanks for your help  :hatsoff:

Maybe it depends on the finish on the metal when it's going through the BO process?

Dunno. I heard something about "diamond like coating", but honestly, I don't know

DLC is a coating, whereas Black Oxide is a form of controlled oxidation. DLC is much more durable, and is sometimes harder than the material it's used on. As far as I know, Leatherman hasn't used DLC on the body of any of their tools.

The early black Skeletool frames were DLC-coated, although I don't know about the current ones. The ARC is DLC-coated on the frame and blade.

As for the Fuse and PST, I would agree that the difference is produced by the level of polish on the tool components prior to coating, and the length of handling after coating for the powdery residue to be removed.  Both tools look great in black!

I think this is it. Look at Victorinox BO finishes. I have a PST that has a shiny BO coating so do a couple of other members.

You're certainely right. I saw a BO PST on eBay for sell, and, looking closely at the pictures, it seems to look like my Fuse (matt and non-glossy appearance).
