I live in the uk. Here the law states that you cannot carry a locking or fixed blade without good reason. Example when I am stage crewing, no problem. If I wanted to carry charge just in case on a walk to the local park that is not allowed.

My membership is official!  :multi:

Next to my trusty Skeletool. Used *and* abused :)

The only "mod" will be to transfer the No.1/No.2 Philips bit from the Skeletool to the Charge. I lost the spare bit for the Skeletool ages ago, and it'll be better off with the No.1 Philips/Flat combo bit from the Charge.

Cool  :), I have a question for you guys: How does the 154CM sharpen/hold and egde?  How does it compare to S30V?

Thanks

154cm is great, s30v is even better. The trick is routinely touching them up so they dont get dull. The longer a steel can hold an edge, the tougher it is to sharpen if you let it get dull. Both are good steels, s30v is just the better at holding the edge. I could explain the crucible particle metal process etc but that gets lengthy

Thanks Accujohn, my knives dont get dull to often because I dont use most of them heavily, I was just wondering to see how easily 154CM sharpens because I was looking to get a lot of use out of my charge.

If you use 154cm daily but touch it up with a few swipes on ceramic rods every 2-3 days it will be a breeze. If you use it daily for a month or 2 and dont touch it up then you kinda need to know what your doing a little more

I just use the Smiths sharpener with the removeable ceramic rods. It also has the diamond hone etc but i just use the ceramic a couple swipes every few days which keeps it popping sharp

How is this for 154CM?

Its got 2 slots, one for sharpening a dull knife, and one for refining the edge, alo it had a rod as seen in pic.

Picked one of them up recently, along with a Lansky Pocket Crock Stick. Pull a small ceramic rod out for finer sharpening.

However I lost one of the sticks and haven't located it.

My favourite is the Spyderco Sharpmaker .Some of you may not agree with me but this is where I think the Wave is a more sensible option .If you don't know what your doing with sharpening S30V or 154CM you will be there for ages and could quiet easily make it blunter . Its not a steel for novices . The 420HC of the Wave can me made to be just as hair popping sharp and as long as you maintain the edge on a regular basis it won't give you any problem .Sometimes I think some people just go for the S30V because its considered better  My Wave will cut rope , seatbelts , fish heads , rubber hose , cheese etc. etc. just as well as my Charge will . I realise that S30V retains the edge for longer but I have never had a problem with 420HC .

Just my two pennies worth .

That's a fair point, but moot, as you can't get a Charge TTi (which I bought for the tool selection, not the type of steel the blade's made from) with a 420HC blade.

So one way or another I have a S30V blade to keep sharp.

Thanks for the tips so far :)

Couple points:
I've been touching up my blades for years and it does take practice. Especially with harder steels. That said, i could have saved time and frustration by avoiding those little pocket sharpeners. Those require you to pull the blade through in an improper direction whic can only get a blade "barely sharp" it also wears away needless steel. Get a full sized smith or lansky sharpener with 4" long+ ceramic rods. Those rods are all you need if you touch up regularily and follow the provided instructions. You can then keep or make any good blade hair popping sharp

The small tools really only serve one purpose, for sharpening the cut-hook. Hence the Smith sharpener has a tapered cone to sharpen that one spot that the other sharpeners can't touch. Pocket Crock sticks pop out of the case to give a finer edge to the cut-hook.

As for regular sharpening past that one area, Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker.

I very much agree with you Dunc. I have some experience with knives and in my opinion the reason you get a steel like S30V, ZDP-189 or 3G is because you can sharpen at a more shallow angle. That's the real benefit! If you have a steel like that the whole idea to me is that it can maintain an edge angle of 12 - 15 degrees inclusive. (And then we're talking sharp) Otherwise I think it's just a waste of money.

If you don't know how to sharpen knives you're much better off buying something that's easy to sharpen. Victorinox blades are fantastic in that regard. I wonder how many people have been watching YT-vids and thought that they had to have a fancy steel and now sit on more or less blunt TTi's.  ::)

If someone would present me with the choice of S30V or 420HC I would pick 420HC. Easier to keep razor sharp and helps you maintain the routine of sharpening your blade after use.

For sharpening in the field get a Fallkniven DC-4 stone and you're set to go.

For house sharpening I too recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Too bad there's no slot for at least 20 degrees.

I like 154 CM, VG10 etc. Easy enough to sharpen if you have a little skill and it holds an edge well.
