Please note that the red paint is simply... paint. It will chip/ wear eventually. Because of the paint, Leatherman had to use smooth scales for maximum adhesion. The red really pops with the SS blades. The only thing I wish mine better is with the file rubbing the inside of the scale, with a bit with red paint stuck to the tip. But the file rubbing is a common minor issue with all Charge models. Buy one, you won't regret it. Mine has 0417 date.

Also, the sheath is model 945016, which is now not available on Leatherman site (https://www.knifecenter.com/item/LM945016/leatherman-945016-charge-premium-sheath). You get two bit cards, which come in a small ziplock bag, together with the Charge in the same box. Pocket clip and lanyard ring are included.
(Image removed from quote.)

chrono, does the headlamp come in a separate package (blister pack)? Is the tool in the traditional cardboard box? I ordered a kit, but I really don't need/want the headlamp, so I'm planning to sell it on, and I'd like to see clear how they ship it. Thanks in advance!

I'm in! Finally my Amercian Red Cross Charge arrived today.  :mail:

I quite like the tool, but I was surprised it came bone dry, it needed a very liberal dose of lube to make it acceptable, and still there's a dry "ffffrrfff" sound while opening the external blades and my thumb easily slips as they do not pivot that easy. (The lockbars are pretty stiff on the PE blade and file side.) Not as smooth out of the box as I imagined. Of yourse it will break in, it already started to behave better after a couple of hours of playing with it, but still I was expecting a bit more.

The file rub is horrible. :D Also, I was surprised to find an integrated lanyard loop at the tip of the saw, I've never seen that mentioned/shown in any review. (And I watched a few, believe me! :) )

I havent decided yet wheter this will be a user for me or if I will keep it in mint condition for a possible resale in a few years.

The hidden lanyard loop is often overlooked ::) :D It comes on the Wave and all charge models though

I also love the look of that Red Cross edition 8) :like: :like:

Hm, I suspect I'll be a silent member of the Charge club, because after fondling it, fidgeting with it for a day now, I have to accept it's just not for me. I have relatively small hands, and the Charge is just a bit too bulky, bit too large, bit too boxy for me. Although it's nicely rounded and everything, for my hand it's just hotspot upon hotspot when I'm operating, holding it, it's just not comfortable, and if it's not comfortable, you don't have the full confidence to use it as intended.

It's a pity, because I really like the concept, the toolset, the form factor, but such is life. I can only wish that one day Leatherman introduces something like the Wave/Charge in a smaller size. They won't, but one can dream. :D

Anyway, I'll just wrap this tool in cotton and mothballs :) and put it away in the hope that in a few years I'll be able to sell it as a collector's item or trade it for something nice.

Welcome to the club!
My Red Cross file rubs too, but not nearly as bad as yours.  :o
I loosened the screws a bit, centered the file and tightened them, and it got a lot better. If I open the file carefully it does not rub anymore.
As a side note, I have seen tons of videos on the tube about the Charge. You'd be amazed how many files you can hear rub against the scale.

I have a few files from Waves and Charges that are slightly bent, hence I reckon the tendency of rubbing with this tool implement.

After crashing and breaking both my arms a few weeks ago I could not race in Lesotho as planned, I still went to support and carried my Charge to help out in the pits a bit.

I guess I’m a member , picked a Charge + TTI a couple of weeks ago , or there abouts . I like the S30V blade , stands in for a folder , most of the time . I find the handles both classy , and comfortable . I also like the stock nylon sheath with the Anular snap , I suspect it will eventually be replaced by a SKINTH L Sheild , or some such .I rather doubt it will last a year in constant wear .

Best Regards,

Chris

Not that I’m complaining but my Charge+TTI doesn’t rub , not that I’m complaining ! I did however notice that both my Wave+ , and Charge+TTI exibited better fit and finish , and were less gritty , than previous iterations , I have owned . Maybe Leatherman’s production is getting more dialed in .

Best Regards,

Chris
