Fixing a blade finish help
on: September 19, 2010, 04:23:53 AM
So my GF distracted me when I was sharpening up my SAK with my Sharpmaker. Apparently I leaned the blade over when she was talking to me and I put some fantastic scratches in the side of the blade, some of which are deep enough to feel  Advice on how to try and remove as much of it as possible? I was thinking some metal polish and a Dremel, but not sure if it'll work well enough. It's really irritating me because I JUST finished getting it cleaned up and putting some new scales on it.

Depending on how deep the scratches are I use med to fine wet n dry keeping the sanding in one direction, once all scratches are gone I then use sanjay green polishing compound and a dremel to finish off

Wow, yeah mine's not THAT bad. Holy crap what was that guy thinking? Guess I'll have to get me some 1200 grit. Now you guys actually wet sand it, or just use the wet sand paper dry?

Awesome, thank's guys. My cousin that I'm visiting on vacation does auto body work for a living, so maybe he'll let me use some of his stuff to help me get everything all shiny again while I'm out there.

Performing Necromancy on this here thread. I finally got around to attempting to fix this today. The wet sanding alone made it look a lot better, after polishing it looks great. I actually intentionally left it looking a bit rough, otherwise I'd have to go and fully restore the entire tool lol. I could have gotten it to perfection but I was happy with it just looking presentable, now it blends in with the wear on the rest of the tool. I never thought to take any before pics, so I figure after pics would be pointless, but I gotta say it is MUCH easier to clean up a scratched up blade than I would have thought. The whole process took me maybe like 15 minutes.

Haha, I could take a pic of what it looks like now, but without knowing what it looked like before it wouldn't really say much would it :P
