Myth Busted...
on: August 30, 2010, 12:13:45 AM
I accidentally tested the old phrase, "Put your shoulder to the wheel."  Instead of my shoulder though, I went small scale and used my fingertip, and since I didn't have a grindstone I used an angle grinder.

Needless to say, the results aren't as positive as the phrase is usually associated with!

No blood, but the grinder was an efficient (if painful) method of removing my fingerprints.

So, now that I've done it and reported my results, I am hoping that no one else here feels the need to do it!

Angle grinders:

A few years ago, I was grinding down some window channels, wearing my goggles, when the angle grinder disc shattered and sent a hunk of it screaming towards my face, and in the process, nearly cutting off my nose (well, one side anyway).

Lots of pain.  Lots of blood.  I had to have my daughter shift gears, because I had to hold pressure on my spurting face, while driving to the ER.

The plastic surgeon cringed a bit when he saw it, but luckily I have a lot of substrate to work with.  :D

32 stitches (PAINFUL stitches :ahhh) to reattach it.

My wife just shook her head when she found out.  She wondered out loud if she should ever leave me alone at home.

Well I'm stuck if I get into that situation as my wife can't shift gears and our car is having issues!  But then I'm no stranger to driving myself to the hospital in a bad situation.  One time I drove myself there then fell down on the floor in triage because of the pain!

I operated the clutch but told her "Up and towards you" or "down and towards me".  She was 12.

My ride? A 1967 Land Rover.

That's awesome!  If you are going to bleed, bleed in style!

It's great that she managed to work the stick- I'd have to wrap gauze around my head and do it all myself.  Kim not only doesn't understand gears, but also panics a lot when I do something that ends in injury.  I crushed my foot in an accident, went home to sleep it off, she insisted I go to the hospital, and I had to drive!

Thank God we had an automatic then!

Having decided that I didn't much go for removing metal strands from my face I bought a full face shield and use it instead of goggles/specs these days.

Of course that hasn't prevented me ripping open my hands on brass rods and the like ::)  In fact its rare I use protective gloves as I find it difficult to control the metal  :-\

I have a healthy respect for fast moving cutting tools myself, and have yet do do myself an injury (there's still time though ).

I did have a 9" masonry cutting disk shatter on me but avoided any injury (by sheer luck), that very nearly made me "follow through" I can tell you.  ;)

can't stand wearing gloves though i know i would be better for it. you can't feel what you are doing. i took off a nice chunk of my thumb a few days ago but unfortunately it was ment to be. live and learn... next time maybe it will be different.

The automatic transmission. God's gift to clumsy people. I know how to drive a stick but since I hurt myself so much if I owned one I'd have to walk half the time. I'm not coordinated enough to drive a stick with one arm and/or one leg.  :D :D
