Help me choose a new wallet
on: December 18, 2010, 10:05:23 PM
This is my present temporary excuse for a wallet..

Last week my wallet literally fell apart.  It was one of the all-ett thin jobs so this wasn't unexpected, they are not designed to last forever :)

It being December there is a very slim chance that someone will give me a wallet for Christmas.  Very unlikely but sod's law says that if I replace it right now someone will have got me one :D  Hence the little notepad and rubber band soloution I'm currrently using.

I find choosing wallets tricky as they are almost always too big.  The all-ett one was incredibly slim which was great but it was designed for US currency so five pound notes fitted fine but tens and twenties stuck out the top.  So this time I'd like something that is a fraction larger than a twenty pound note.  It should be bi-fold and I only have a need to carry two bits of plastic so multiple card slots are not required.

No need for an ID window or the like.  The only quirky addition that would be incredibly handy but I've not seen it done is an outside compartment to hold blank business cards for use in writing down quick notes.  That idea I got from here  But where they hold index cards my ideal would hold credit card sized blank cards on the outside of a bi-fold wallet.

Cost is a factor, so bespoke Italian designs are out :)    All thoughts and ideas welcome.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I was faced with a similar predicament earlier this year.I too made do until I found a suitable alternative.
My advice is TKMaxx, keep looking and eventually you will find just what you want.It took me about three months ::)
Different wallets appeal to different people so it's best to see them "in the flesh" before you buy.

That would mean actually going into TKMaxx  :ahhh

Not as bad as having to go to ikea though and at least there is a local one :)     Its a backup plan :D

I can't see a problem with going into TKMaxx.
Most of my clothes come from there :D

Get a Saddleback leather medium wallet. It will be the last wallet you will ever buy. I even think they have a 100 year warrenty but don't quote me on that. It's a little thicker than other bi folds but it's amazingly well put together especially for the price.

Unless you are totally miffed off with All-ett, I have been using the leather international wallet for several months now and it's holding up brilliantly.

It's still uberthin but the leather outer makes it a lot tougher. It's tall enough to disappear a 20 too so it covers your bases :)

I had one of their international wallets and it didn't last the year :(   The only reason I was until recently using another of their offerings was that I picked it up for next to nothing.

Don't get me wrong they are incredibly thin and lightweight and they are advertised as only having a finite lifespan but they're not cheap enough for me to replace every twelve months  :-\

I'm using a big skinny.  Check out their selection of world wallets.  You can get nylon or leather hybrid (I'm using a hybrid and it's holding up quite well).  Cheap too.

Neil, I have a lightly used one like Prime posted, but it's in a Dark Coffee color. Yours if you want it.

Thanks for the offer John  :salute:   A rather nice chap over in Serbia has already offered me a wallet if the local Santa doesn't provide one in a few days time ;)

Those Saddleback's look very well made.  Some of their bags look pretty bomb proof as well :tu:

I currently use a "The Wallet Jr" from Bqmasters and it does a pretty good job.  I've been through many wallets over the years because it's hard to find one I'm happy with.  I'm actually thinking of trying the small Maxpedition wallet next.  Good luck with your search  :-\

I use a Spec Ops THE Wallet , or the Jr. iteration of same . Bullet and bombproof , the closure is idiot proof and non velcro . The big guy gets used for times when I need a passport , the Jr. for the rest . Wallets are one case where I prefer nylon to leather - much better around highly acidic moisture !

Are you meant to put coins in your wallet?

I normally keep any loose change in my pocket :)

+1 on the Saddleback wallet. Never handled one but it sure looks like it is built to last  :tu:

I hate loose change and avoid it like the plague.  I certainly don't want it in my wallet, my pocket or anywhere within 44 meters of me.  If I do get spare change, I will often hand it over to my wife or if she's not around, any complete stranger will do.  It accumilates in your pocket like a tumor on your leg and I'm not near rude enough to attempt to spend it in a store while others stand by with their goods and I slowly count out exact change  :-[  Anyone else for banning the penny while we're at it  :P

I drive a lot for work so I got one of these coin holders  :tu:

Holds all coins from 10p to £2; very handy to have in the car  :D

The coppers, 1p's and 2p's, are bagged up and taken to the Coin Counter in Tesco's  :D My 5p's [fiddly little things] are kept in a small box in the car for parking meters, etc. They never get used so I know they'll always be there for back up for the meter  :tu:

I'm guessing you guys aren't up for scrapping the dollar bill in favour of a dollar coin then  :D

You know, growing up, I always wanted one of those... :dd:

I love the dollar coin!  But then I really like the 1 and 2 Euro coins too (Can't remember, but I think there's a 5'er too right?).

I keep going back to those saddleback wallets.  One of these days, I'm going to get one.

In Euro's you get quit a lot of loose change. I do not like it either but 10 euros in change is not a problem after a lunch and/or some groceries and a bit much for me to give away each day. I'm good but not that good  ;) BTW, a lot of stores over here ask for loose change, otherwise they (as a retailer) have to pay the bank to get it. And counting 6 euro's for cigarettes or whatever will take about 2 seconds  :hu: In short, we like wallets with a coin pocket  :D

Years ago before I boycotted loose change, I carried a zipper change wallet and kept some cash in it as well.  I rarely needed to take my main wallet out for anything.  I wish I could remember who made it - as I would recommend it for you  :-\
