Fiddle Factor Tools
on: September 28, 2007, 07:40:23 PM
Talking about the ByrdWrench in another thread got me to thinking about the fiddle factor in relation to tools.  Some of the tools available seem to have just as much (or more) value for something to play with than as actual tools.  So far, in my collection I have a few fiddle-y tools, and I was wondering what tools everyone else thought of that should be on the list, or which tools you are addicted to playing with.

Spyderwrench/ByrdWrench- I play with the whole thing, pliers, blade, taking it apart and putting it back together.

Leatherman Crunch- Open close, close open, open close, close open, and when I am feeling particularily festive, snap it in and out of the kydex sheath from On Scene Tactical

SOG Switch Plier- pretty well just snap it open, close it, snap it open, close it...  occasionally squeeze my finger in it to test that the compound leverage is still there

Leatherman Surge/Wave/Charge- flicking the blades open and closed, occasionally rotating the tool and snapping open the other blade

Wenger Alinghi- opening the blade, pliers and marlin spike one handed over and over again, but you have to be careful with the Alinghi because the strong backspring will fire that plier handle into your fingers faster than you can cover that curse word so your three year old doesn't start saying it!

Victorinox Rescue Tool- opening and closing the main and rescue blades as well as the glass saw over and over again

ResQMe tool- don't do what I did and press the big black button at the bottom.  Take my word for it, it's very unpleasant.

SOG PowerLock- floppy pliers are fun!

Gerber MP600- fun to flick the plier heads out over and over again!

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.  Any others have a high fiddle factor?

We should come up with a scale for this to include it in the Wiki! :D

The SOG powerlock is definatly the tool that gets played with more than other. You Can Balisong it open and also the tool covers make great fiddle material.

I personally find the locks on the Pulse/ST 200 to be interesting, and high on my fiddle-factor list. I also love the slip-joint snapping on the Juice series. :)

You are right, I forgot about the lock mechanism on the ST 200!  Good one!

At one point I had a Gerber Recoil.  That thing turned some heads.

I thought about adding that one to the list, but since I never had one I figured I couldn't really put it on.

The X-Tract does as well, being able to open and close all impliments one handed...now that is fiddling.

Mine would be the SOG Powerlock. It's so effortless to keep flicking open and I don't think I'll ever get bored of seeing the gearing system move  :)

I suspect the new SOG PowerAssist will rank high on the Fiddle Factor Scale.

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

For me, the Zilla-Tool and the Crunch are total fiddle factors.

I'm still working on my Crunch flipping skills so every slow moment at work I flip it around and try to do it faster and smoother.

The Zilla-Tool is just fun to flip the blade open and closed and to lock and unlock the pliers because of the satisfying snap the ball detent makes.

My gerber 800 legend with the spring pliers, just keep squeezing them!.. Or my powerlock hitting the lock buttons!
