Sad news for Australian knife collectors... : (
on: December 19, 2010, 10:13:51 AM
I was just informed that Australian Customs have banned all assisted knife importing in and out of Australia, does anyone know any information on this?

I was in the process of buying a very nice SOG Twitch II when I was told that my only chance of getting one is from someone who is selling one in Australia.

So dissappointed, I LOVE assisted quality knives and im a collector with no intention of useing it illegally, but the law is the law i suppose you cant do anything about it.

Yeh I hear you mate , I had my folks bring in a SOG PowerAssist(in their checked luggage) as I did not want it getting seized & then destroyed by customs as at least 60% of my parcels get opened & checked by customs, when items(MTs + knives) are posted too me.

I have contacted Oz customs regarding AO & the wording of the law is VERY ambiguous. I was told a knife like the Kershaw Leek would be seized but the wording of the law is more towards 'flick knives'.It is up to the individual customs agent as to wether the knife in front of them is legal or not ::) ::) ::). There are Oz knife sellers who sell AO knives , apparently legally , I think they get a permit   BUT they then ask you for a kidney as payment (charge a lot of $$). One Ebay seller said 80% of his AO knives get through to him.

I looked into getting a permit but it seemed a bit of a hassel so I did not pursue it.I would suggest you give it a go if you really like your AO knives mate. I think you can legally own a AO knife but if the police had reason to search/detain you & you had a AO knife it would not be good.

Ask about a permit mate  :tu: :tu: , let us know how you go. I just hope we do not get Victoria's mad knife laws nationally.

I dont think I will apply for a permit, I think if I plan to continue collecting I will just have to pay whatever price they are going for on ebay etc.

Such a shame.
