30 days with the Kershaw Skyline (1760) 1/4/11-2/4/11

Ok guys, I found a budget knife that I really love. It's not a new knife, but one I've never heard of. People around the knife community seem to really love this knife so I decided to pick one up. Wow, $34.97 at WalMart for an American made edc flipper.  :o  :o

Here are the specs:

http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=430&brand=kershaw

Here is a great review by that Nut dude!   :D

Here is what I'm going to do. I'm going to carry this knife as my only edc blade for the next month. This will be hard for me, but I really want to put this knife to the test. I won't be doing a formal review but I will be posting my thoughts from time to time during the one month period. So far out of the box I can highly recommend it for the $35 price tag. Razor sharp and a very solid build.  :tu: One thing I don't like right off is the thumb studs. They're a little too close to the frame and that makes it hard to get a good purchase on the studs. Luckily there is a flipper that makes it really easy to open.

Keep checking back and I'll update this thread as we go along.

My brother has one and I agree, it's a really nice knife.  I've been trying to snag his Skyline for the longest time but no luck.  :(  $35 USD for one sounds awesome.  Here in Canada, they cost about $50-$60... and my local WalMart don't sell knives anymore. :(

This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

Outside of Buck knives, that WILL be the norm in Canada for the forseeable future.  There are only two major US wholesalers that do business in Canada because of the knife laws we have here.
Buck will be a bit cheaper because Wal-Mart carries a ton of Buck models and they have... how do we say... buying power?

The Skyline is pretty cool though, I just wish I got along better with Sandvik steels.

I've been carrying a Skyline off and on for about 8 months.  I don't think there is another knife in its price range that can come close to it.

Look at the Buck Vantage Avid, large or small.  Very nice flipper knives as well, also made in the US, also using Sandvik steel (13c26).

I am with you bud, the Buck Vantages are great knives for the money..........

........easily comparable with the Skyline. And in my view actually better.

I like the Buck Vantage and will probably make one my next purchase.  It's just a little heavier and bulkier (4.0 oz as opposed to 2.4) than the Skyline.  It is also just a bit more expensive with the same steel.  One can still get the Skyline for $25-30 if you look around.  I think the Vantage Pro version -G-10 like the Skyline but has S30V steel- is a great buy.  The Big Fish Store down the road sells the Pro for 49.95 and that is next on my list to get.

Different strokes for different folks.  I like both, but Kershaw knives are rarely cheap up here in the Frozen North while Buck knives I can generally get at a decent discount - for me, the Avid large and Skyline are generally within $5 of each other.  If I could find a Vantage Pro in small for a reasonable price I'd be all over it.

Not too much to report here. The Skyline is a great little edc knife.  :tu:  It's done everything I've asked of it. The edge is still holding up nicely, so I haven't had a need to sharpen it yet.

How do you find it for slicing? I really never got to use mine before I ruined it, but It felt like it would slice like no other being such a thin blade.

I might just have to get another.

I haven't had to do any real slicing, so I'll have to give it a try.  :tu:
