Autumn/Fall
on: October 16, 2007, 05:57:01 PM
So what have you guys n girls been up to ???

What do you try to get out and do, or jobs that you try and finish before the big freeze arrives ???

I try and get down the woods as often as I can, to take in all the sight and smells of all the leaves falling, and practice my fire making skills, before I have to test them in winter :) :)

All the last minute stuff like the last coat of preserve on the shed check the fencing etc .When I get the time to myself (I know it's me time when pigs fly past the bedroom window and I don't mean the force helicopter) I like to spend some time just enjoying the outdoors and trying to make fire Scotland is so wet and miserable it's hard work!

That's true >:( It can be bloody difficult down here too, all that moisture, damp and rain can make it a real bugger to get a fire going ::)

So what knife/axe do you use in the sticks then ??? ???

The paranoia get my goat too >:( (bloody press, bloody politicions >:( >:( )

You can't go wrong with a mora, there a damn fine knife regardless of the price :), as long as you've got a good technique there'll split wood and make feather sticks better than knives costing 10 times as much :)

Plus if you shop around you can pick one up for less than a tenner O0 O0

I've been out in the hills a bit,LM Pulse in one pocket, and either a Vic Hiker,or Farmer in another. However it's been so dry, that fire making is decidedly out, unless I'd like a visit from the fire marshal. My cycling has taken a bit of a slide these past couple days, fighting off a head cold.

Went on a short hike with the wife to get to this view not to far from our house. It's called Chickie's Rock, though I dont know why :D Nice easy hike through the woods on a very pleasant day, the kind you can't decide if you want a jacket or just a t-shirt until you start moving, and then you just want the t-shirt :D. Carried my Charge TI.

Not my picture, as we forgot the camera ::)

This won't matter much to anyone else here... but you got me thinking so I looked it up. Turns out it was named after the Native American word "Chiquesalunga" meaning "place of the crayfish". Makes sense because a lot of local names can be traced back to Native American languages...

With deer season in full swing out here, I try to avoid the woods near my house (there are some crazy people out there).  Once firearm deer season is over, I usually start squirrel hunting quite a bit.

There's a State park 15 miles from my house that I hit when I feel like taking a nature walk.  They've got 6-7 trails out there that I like to hike.

Here's a picture of Lost Lake, which is really not much more than a large pond. it is on state land about three miles from our house. Not many folks even know it is there. The week before I took this picture there were two otters frolicking around along the shore. I secretly watched them for about thirty minutes.
(but forgot my camera that day)

I need to head up there and go fishing!

And often used that way too! There's one town upriver of me that is so squeezed in by hills and river that's often described as being  a block wide and a mile long.
