a big boo for the micro tool clip
on: January 11, 2011, 06:02:50 AM
Got four tool clips today, one in each color. One did not have a complete letter I but that is just cosmetic. Two have dimples in the file. Three have play in the pliers, two have a little acceptable play. For the price I can understand the qc process letting them through but I will not accept the quality of the third. It has more play in the pliers than any name brand or cheap tool I have purchased. My wife also commented on how bad it was. For those who are waiting to buy one I would say don't. I got a really nice one and a piece of junk so who knows what you will get I will post pics of thee pliers this week

I too am not impressed with the new SOG Micro Tool Clip. My 2 pieces I bought are not that bad but they are also not that good either.  :-[

I own a SOG Cross Grip and Cross Cut. The new Micro Tool Clip does not even come close.  :-\

I don't own one but recently got to have a fondle and was actually pleasantly surprised.  Aside from the totally useless placement of the phillips driver on the handle tip I quite liked it.  Based on my limited handling I thought it was an excellent little tool for the money.

I guess the issue is one of quality control.  Hopefully there are not too many duds out there but your experience does not fill me with optimism :(

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Hmmmm, the reason for the delayed release of the micro tool clip was because of issues with QC and now we are getting reports that the quality is crap. The quality on the first batch of tool clips must have been completely trash.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

So wait, SOG delayed this MT by like 9 months to get the quality up to spec and it's still not up to spec?  What was SOG doing, picking their noses the whole time?

I would ship it back but the cost isn't worth it when you consider how cheap these are
I will try to get a pic today. You guys may think it isn't that bad after all the hype but I think it is.

They are all from the same run, so I doubt there would be any difference.

Oh, and if you are a collector, I would suggest holding on to these ones.  I can't say why just yet, but trust me, if you think of yourself as a collector you'll want to keep them.

I'm waiting to see if the rest are in similar mismatched qualities, plus a review.  I am curious to see when other runs will be produced... not that I don't remember a nugget of information on them being posted... somewhere?

I have no idea.  I don't know what the sales are like.  You'd probably be safe to wait until then, but you'd be better off talking to a retailer (like Travis) than me about it.

Gosh Terry, I wonder if you got a dud batch? :( My four from Travis arrived last Friday, and they are actually pretty good. :tu: No play in the pliers in any of them, and no dimples in the files like you mentioned yours has.

I'll get some pictures up soon. :)

huh, thanks for the info Bob. the dimples are smal but for a Sog highly unexpected. the pink tool doesn't allow me to push the locking pin up all the way so it is definetly a dud. I looked at them closer and the black and blue tools have a little play but are acceptable. I have never owned a sog with noticable play but those two are still acceptable. ocassionally I will get a tool from a major brand with little play that does not affect the tool. the green and pink tools have too much play. Some may think this is not bad but if you consider there is this much play in between the wire cutters, than it will fold wire in the cutters rather than cut it. I know there will not be as much distance between the cutters as there is the nose of the tool but you get the idea. I like the blue and black one very much, it is a shame the blue one is missing the tip of the i in clip.

sorry about the crappy pic (and spelling), I feel it unfair to give a big boo  :td: but with two having plier play one of the good tools having a cosmetic issue, I am dissapointed.

Now just for comparison, on all four of mine, you can snip paper with the wire cutters, no problem. :)

I wonder if when the branded them MTO if they checked them for quality as they did it so all the MTO ones are good...
probably not. I will go home and try the blue and black on paper.

Mine (a black mt.o one) arrived today and it looks almost the same. Doesn't cut paper, too.

I like the size and the collection of tools it has, but the file seems almost useless. Feels not aggressive at all and I wonder if it will work.

I wanted the Micro ToolClip to use it (I am not a collector). But now I guess I will put it away, wait a while and then offer it to some collector who wants it just because it is a Micro ToolClip.

I had nine of them delivered to me today- one set of plain and one set of Multitool.org models, plus an extra one for a friend of mine and none of them have anywhere near the amount of play shown above.  Some have a slight bit of play, but no more than some other brands I've seen.
