Gerber is hit and miss in the design department. However, I do like their multi-tools simply because they are not afraid to try different wacky things that nobody else would try (650, recoil, grappler, etc...). Now if only they would utilize a polished stainless steel finish on their tools and eliminate that bead blasting they do, I would like their tools all the more.

Their 400/600/diesel tools are very likeable along with the Octane.
A little Leatherman information.

Yeah that's the big area where I like Gerber myself. They have no fear of experimentation, and it results in some really good ideas. If they would just implement those ideas better instead of placing themselves barely above Chinese knockoff territory, they'd be a true contender. They have sure found their niche in the market, and it seems to be serving them well, but I don't like companies that survive purely on a reputation they no longer deserve.

I definitely agree with giving Gerber kudos for new designs and innovations :salute:
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I too thought the Octane was a great tool until I found out those wire cutters are not for cutting wire

I really do love my MP600.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) I haven't had any experience with anything else in their lineup.  Though I did almost buy a Clutch the other day.

Made in the USA?

Poor Gerber!     How many of their tools are still made in the USA?

I'm beginning to wonder if the MP600's I have are made in the USA. Nowhere on the individual box nor on the tool does it say MADE IN THE USA.

It says GERBER USA on the side of the tool but I think that is just indicating it's a US based company. I bought two dozen of these and it doesn't even indicate on the big box that they came in where they were manufactured.  Almost like they are trying to skirt the issue.  It doesn't even say MADE IN CHINA.

These are standard USGI issue tools, also.

Even these, that are obviously made in China say GERBER USA on them:

If the ones I have are made in China (Which I suspect, I mean, the contract obviously went to the lowest bidder) it is kind of funny that our soldiers have Chinese made tools in their survival vests.

From the looks of it I think the MP600's might have been made here in the past but not so sure where they are currently being manufactured.  Notice in this picture how it says GERBER USA on the saw blade?  Mine do not have that imprint.

I think I might email Gerber and see what they have to say.

And Mine:

You've put your finger right on the issue for me. I've been offered a few Gerbers for free from friends but theres only a few models i'm really interested in. The Legend 800 looks good and based off Grants review i'd like to take a look at an Octane. Maybe a Diesel and thats about it... other stuff just doesn't appeal to me based off what i've seen.

Those just "look" more like a real tool than what they put out today. The look alone makes me want one, even if they weren't made any better, and I know they were.
