Anyone may use this software during a test period of 40 days. Following this test period of 40 days or less, if you wish to continue to use WinRAR, you must purchase a license.
Yes, that's what it says but so does WinZip. The trials for both never stop working though.
WinRar is THE standard for compression in let's just say, ummm... certain areas of the internet because of it's support for PAR(ity) files. It is the second most popular archiver in the world next to ZIP. (pkzip anybody?)
Plus, because WinRar is (finally) available in a 64 bit version and supports multi-threading its a godsend for those of us that spend our lives buried in huge compressed files. I did purchase a license after using it for so many years though.
You are right though. It's not open-source like 7Zip so it's not technically FREE. (Actually, now that I think about it the DECOMPRESSER is free, it's the archiver that they suggest you purchase after 40 days.)
