Rocky Cree XRE LED 200 Lumens
on: January 14, 2011, 04:25:57 PM
I bought a 2-pack of these as Sams yesterday for $30 and at first glance it seems to be a pretty good light.  I've not been able to find much info on this except a thread on CPF.  Anyone else have one of these?

Here's a link to an Ebay auction but they're charging more for them:

Runs on 6 AAA's?  Wow, that's a lot of battery...

I like the looks of it, especially the Stainless steel one.  How are the threads on it?  What about the clickie switch?

I may have to stop at Sam's Club on the way home...

I'm not sure what you're looking for in the threads, but the tail cap has quality threading, twists smoothly and locks up tight.

The switch operates as follows:

Push button mode
Click once - 100 lumens
Click again - 200 lumens
Edit: Click again - Strobe light
Off

Basically smooth threads but not too loose, so things wiggle loose.

For the switch, I like a definite click on and off.  It also helps if it isn't easy to inadvertantly turn off.

You're not dissuading me, here... :ahhh

You do need to cycle thru all modes to get from on to off - unless you use signal mode (push and hold a sec then light shines at 200 lumens until you let go).

As I set here fiddling with this thing, I must correct myself - there is no signal mode - it is more like "momentary press/release" mode.

Sounds like they slapped another 3 AAAs in the Techlite Lumen Master... could you post a picture of the tailcap, inside and out?

It honestly sounds like a 6xaaa version of the light I was modding in this post: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,22954.msg443970.html#msg443970

If that's true:
1.  It'll work fine, but you'll get a badly declining output on alkalkines.
2.  The electronic switches in those lights have a terrible, terrible vampiric drain issue.  If you're keeping them around as emergency lights, unscrew the tailcaps and leave the battery carriers out and separate.

I'm still loving this light and have been putting it to use almost daily.  One thing I wish was it had a momemtary shut-off instead of having to go through all the cycles even after it's been on in one mode for some time. (if that makes sense?).

I am concerned with the remark about battery leakage and could someone tell me at what rate I could expect this because I'm still getting what appears to be the full effect from the original batteries?

The vampiric drain issue may have been fixed with newer versions, but that electronic switch used to completely drain 3xAAAs in something like 2 weeks.

Also, there *should* be a momentary feature - hold the switch down for 1 second to go to high, and the light should shut off after you release it.

Yes, it has that kind of "momentary" function, however, I would like once a mode is selected and used for a period of time that the next button press resulted in the light turning off - rather than cycling through the subsequent modes.
