got a used swiss champ
on: January 20, 2011, 09:09:43 PM
Hay guys

ok I have not done too much of a search but i was wondering if you guys can direst me tell me a little

First what is this one? i attached a poor picture, (sorry)

I think I got a wegner "swiss champ" like multi (or i assume thats what it is) used and its in good enought shape

the only real issue is the tip of the blade has the tip chipped off.  will they fix it that? do you send away these?

Ok its used so I want to clean it make sure these no blood or what ever creepy in it what do i clean in i assume bleach is not an option and i cant take it appart like a leatheman so how do i go about this?

also there are some skuff on the sides, thy are not bad but do i have an option to clean that up? i would love some wood sides but am not too handy with wood and not sure how to take one of these apprt but thats another story i know i have seen that talked about on the forums here. you guys sand them I have seen does this work for the non see thru plastics?

Other than that a little oil after and i think its good to go

thanks

PEACE

I believe that is a Wenger ToolChest.  (Wenger's version of the Vic Swiss Champ)

You can use pretty much anything under your kitchen sink to clean it (but not boiling water!)  and a Qtip or an old toothbrush  :tu:

You could re-profile the tip of the blade with some emery-cloth yourself with some patience (power tools will speed this up)

I'm not sure what to advise you to use to polish the scales with, I would try a household polish to begin with
You can always call Rotokid or Neil for some new scales  :salute:

toolchest cool ok ill look closer at its specs to see thanks
ya know i used a light scotch on the sides and its good ehough you know some deeper ones but its used so thats fine they are really not too bad
cleaning really anything... ok thanks i wont worry so much than.
thanks
im excited paid 40 for it and other then a small chip i am set its really all else in good shape, I repaird a worse blade with patience and a stone so im think ill just work this one it for what its worth the rest of the blade is in good shape.

new scales eh? i will look for them, that would be even cooler!

Actually, looking at the SAK wiki,

This might be the discontinued, Matterhorn plus (I don't see pliers, which would make it the Tool Chest Plus--not Tool Chest, which doesn't have the compass)

Worth a look:

thanks kind new to the swiss side of things
"The Wenger Matterhorn Plus is a large 85mm model similar to the Tool Chest Plus. This is an older discontinued model."
Great to know, thanks for helping

thats a great site too!

Some Brasso and a bit of hard work will bring a bit of a shine back to those scales.  Like you say I'd be tempted to just re-shape the blade on a stone.  Pics when it's done.  :pok:  :D

This one?  There are probably redone SAK blade tip pics about the forum somewhere

You should be able to reprofile that tip OK.  I always recommend using files and stones rather than power tools though as its easy to mess the temper of the blade up.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Neil nice work wow
i think fo rmy blade i will have to forget the idea of reshaping it blade to look like it use to and may have to pick another shape angle to the tip
Oh and thankd for the advice not to use power tools, I should have though of that myself tho

well it sure is not a swiss champ but I is nice

Yep its all doable, if you use power tools don't let the steel get too hot
Good luck with it and do some before and after pictures please  :salute:

As you can guess I was very pleased with how this turned out  :tu:

Yes I see the power tool problem.
Well ill try some before and after pics for sure and share em with you guys.
I really appreciate the help offered!

I plan to profile the blade a little different than original and to me that's fine.

Thanks a lot.

Peace

I don't know what power tools you have but make sure you have a cup of water next to you, then when you hold the blade you can feel it warming up and quench it  :tu:

Thanks Neil you but you should see the stuff I've buggered up (I was inspired me to try things like this because of that exact picture, Thanks my little SAK modder!) :salute:

Lol, fair enough.  What's wrong with it being half an inch shorter?  That just means it's been in cold water.  :o

My first, and still only really, restoration was a Swisschamp I got used. I was amazed at how easy it was to clean up some serious damage i did to one of the blades. Just be careful about it and it's a lot easier than you think, and a lot of fun. I really hope to do some more restorations down the line.

Looking at yours it should (just) have enough left to recreate a spearpoint if you wanted to retain a similar shape but I'd be tempted to drop a straight down from just after the nail nick and flatten the belly a bit.
