Is the corkscrew the most useful tool on a SAK?
on: January 25, 2011, 05:51:48 PM
In the MacGyver episode Good Knight MacGyver, Part 2, MacGyver and Merlin are hanging precariously on a wooden slat that is about to break.  MacGyver takes out his trusty SAK and stabs the plank above the breaking one and screws in the corkscrew which will ultimate be his only hold for a few seconds where one handed with the weight of 2 bodies hanging from it, it holds them up and once again saves the day.

It must be the most useful tool on a SAK.  :)

It is great for breaking tight knots in para-cord.

It can open a bottle of wine too. ;)

I heard somewhere that if you wrap fishing line around it a certain way you can pay out the line by simply unwrapping it by hand but if you were to just pull on it the shape of the corkscrew would prevent it from unraveling on its own.
Might be nice for survival fishing. Just keep a good amount of line on there and a little hook and lure tucked inside and you're ready to go.

As a beer drinker I lean in directions quite different to the one intended, and sometimes it feel like I am leaning in several directions at the same time

As a wine drinker I tend to lean significantly further in directions quite different to the one intended, but my grin is bigger

For some reason it is one of my favorite tools. The corkscrew, magnifying glass, and the metal file (hoping to find a donor for the file so I can work a mod up). Maybe it's because of the mini-screwdriver that is made possible by it, or maybe it's the kid in me that likes the MacGuyver story. Quite possibly I just like wine.

Now, you want to talk about a real useful tool, let's discuss the fish scaler. Not only is it good for scaling fish (well, small ones of certain species) it's also great for.... well, it's really good for.... Okay, the ruler is... I got it, the hook disgorger is great for thinking about removing nails from boards.

On a side note, I notice MacGuyver's SAK in the above episode is a Plus model. Nice. :)

The sak wiki says the fish scaler is great for pumpkin carving.
I also notice the tip is somewhat shaped like a crab fork. That's pretty cool if the model also includes pliers like on the angler, crush that shell with the pliers then whip out the scaler and chow down. lol

As for the corkscrew, other than the uses mentioned in this thread it's also good for drilling your sak into the side of a tree so you can use the can opener or something as a hook for hanging things.
The cork remover effect can also be expanded to include other things that are hard to grab like the cotton in pill canisters for example.

My favorite use for it though is to hold other items like a small firesteel or rolled up piece of paper or that little screwdriver it comes with.

I have used the ruler on the fish scaler several times.  Never used it on fish, though.

I never use the damn things so I tend not to own SAKs that have them. However, I have never been tested by the situation our hero MacGuyver got himself into. I don't know which tool I could use instead

Parcel hook perhaps? Never found much of a use for that thing either :D

Corkscrew is very good for pulling up fitted carpets but that's not something I have to do very often.  More recently I found a new use.

I have two pairs of jeans that the zip pull has a tendency to drop flat downward and get stuck there.  I don't chew my nails but twice now I've found myself in the embarrassing situation of not being able to do up my fly  :ahhh  :-[  The tip of the corkscrew saved me :)

Sorry for the over share :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Now that should be in the SAK manuals!
Try that with a Phillips :P

Well... depending on the actual zip pull thingy in question, it may also work with the multi purpose hook  Not pointy :)

Screw that! :D

Hook wouldn't have worked, too wide.  An awl might have worked but I tend to pocket carry a Scientist.

I have to admit, this idea has never crossed my mind.    It's a useful tip but I can easily see this going badly in a number of ways...  not to mention trying to explain why you are using a corkscrew near your crotch if someone walks in.   :o
