Mini Mag Pro ?
on: January 26, 2011, 04:20:22 PM
On another Forum , I heard about a AA MiniMag Pro . It claims aprox 170 Lumens , a very simple user interface ( on/off) , and a return of the lanyard hole . Pricepoint is to be under $30.00 US .

I can see it selling well in the Security /L.E. industry . It will fit in a lot of existing pouches and leather .

Anyone know anything about it , I will grab one , if one appears at a reasonable price .

Lots of stuff at SHOT is just concept models , and never actually see daylight . Hope this one does .

Could it be that Mag is beginning to get smart ?

I still think Mag's XL 100 is the best thing since sliced bread.  If that's the direction they're taking I'd be open to try their future products  :tu:

I still fail to see how they could put the XL100 out without a pocket clip . HAIII would also be nice .

I agree with the XL100 and sliced bread.
UI is simple when you want simple, but bells/whistles available with the twist of the wrist.

+1 to the xl 100,
I was wondering if they were going to do something like that too. Not to start rumors...
but if I was them I'd be starting a different higher end product line to compete with Surefire, Streamlight, Fenix, etc. You know so you could have lower cost, good preforming products for the general market with good lumen ratings and longer battery life like the newer multi mode minimag, and the xl100/50, and higher end products, with the bells and whistles, HAIII, Higher lumen ratings, shock absorbing systems, different bezels, you name it.
With their manufacturing ability, and distribution networks they could very easily dominate the market(again), provided they produce a competitive product.

Mag can be very frustrating , they have some good stuff , but leave lots of money on the table . They have lots of catchup ahead of them . The Solitaire and AAA Mini should have been LED from the get go 5mm Nichas or some such would have worked just fine .

Agreed, I still can't understand why they haven't done an LED Solitaire.

Have you ever considered maybe Mag still profits from the replacement bulbs?  Those cost a fortune and LED means more production cost and less maintenance revenue

Yeah, but cancelled out by folks buying alternative products. Increased profit margins on products are only any good if people are buying them.

They should wake up and smell the coffee , in many market segments the incan is on it's way out .

Hurrah, more like minded XL100 lovers  :tu: :salute:

It's one of my faves too :D

Have you seen the XL200?

Effectively the XL100 but the interface is different. Rather than turning the light a certain way and choosing your mode you just click your way through

It is unforgivable that this is their third model and they still haven't corrected some basic errors like anti-roll, pocket clip, lanyard hole. Not to mention the 3 x AAA battery setup  ::)

I still love my XL100 and plan to hold on to it for a long time  :tu:

5mm Nichias wouldn't have worked at all, seeing as how the Mini AAA was released in '87, and Solitaire in '88.  Nichia didn't have a high-output gallium nitride 5mm LED until 1993, and it was blue (no phosphor).  :P  :D

Oops , good point . One would have thought that by the early years of the new century they could have caught up a teeny bit .

Agreed.

MagLite has become such a household name over the last ~30 years in the US that they can sit on their laurels (asses?) and still sell a lot of low tech products.  I'm not speaking of the more recent developments such as the XL100--I think they actually put some thought into those.

It's so bad that I have to un-learn everyone around my house how to use a flashlight.  "Remove your hand from the head of that flashlight and just step away!".  :ahhh  I think I'll epoxy the heads onto my remaining LED Maglites in focused position.  That'll un-learn 'em!

Anyway, I look forward to seeing more about the Mag Pro.  From your description it might be promising.

Terry , in the unlikely event I score one first , I'll try an review it . Truth be told , I don't mind the gen II AA MiniMag . Leaving the disco ball function aside , it works pretty well .

For me the deal breakers with the XL family are size , and lack of a lanyard loop or pocket clip . They would be near useless in a work context , ( slippery and no tether ) , and they are larger than a single CR123 EDC light .

In my hood , CR123's are about $2 an change Can. . My Novatac ( about 15 months old ) is only on it's second cell . This is cheaper than operating an XL on multiples of 3 AAA's . In a work context , I can't get freindly with rechargeables , and ya gotta carry fresh primary backups anyway .

If I was in a ___________ like the UK , I might come to a different conclusion , but for me the 3xAAA concept is a no go/deal breaker .

AA is a better form factor , plus gives some capability for use as an improvised impact device .
