No, but to be honest I'm not a fan of nsetting light to something then putting it in my pocket  :ahhh
Tried those charcoal stick doofers years ago - worked well for about a week. After that the sticks would extinguish themselves partway down, and once it come open in my pocket ... never again!

Don't know how the zippo one compares, but I'll personally be staying clear

as a boy, I slept in a car one night in winter.
put one in front shirt pocket and fell asleep.
the morning after I had a square blister of the exact size and shape on my chest. don't know if it was slow cooking or poisoning, but it lasted six months or so.

I have two Peacock pocket warmers. Love them, and I use zippo fluid with them. I never had a problem with these, and it's great to have something warm with you on a cold day.

Hay I got one reciently

I had a little bit of trouble getting it to light the first time

BUT...

I was outside a for a whole day in the freezing, and had this in my chest pocket, amazing kept it zipped in and kept my core warm.

its not something to hold in your hand and keep warm BUT to keep in a pocket and the warmth stays there. and for a long time.

Its a must have for outdoors inthe cold

Its got my vote!

However it does put out a light smell.

Peace

With my peackock it's important to keep it in the bag it comes with. Without the bag it's really hot, and it could get open (Not sure if the burner itself can set something on flame, but I won't try)  :ahhh
I especially like that I have a little bit influence on how long it burns by how much I fill it. Mine comes with a little cone which I can just fill half for a walk (about 6 hours), or even twice for a whole day (24 hours).

And yes, they smell a little bit, depends on the fluid you use. In my experience the Zippo is good, smells very few (and you don't smell it if it's in your pocket).

Great info guys!

I carried a Zippo for years but always had troubles with fuel leakage with the lighters. Any thoughts on this on the handwarmers?

You have to fill it just before you use it. Then it burns until the fuel is used up. (I guess the zippo will work the same as the peacock). I don't think it is possible to fill it days before you want to use it.
If you don't overfill it and start it immediately, the fuel will just burn and not leak (at least with the peacock).

Thread necro!

On my recent visit to my parent's place my father and I were discussing how much we hate the cold, and I was complaining about how cold I get at work- it's not just the cold here, it's the wet, and given that I work on ships, I'm always exposed to a certain amount more moisture than there is in the air, since the wind will carry the ocean spray a fair bit inland.  The problem here isn't the cold, which is far from extreme, it's the wet that makes the cold much worse.

My father showed me his old charcoal stick heater doodad and claimed he'd worn it around his neck for years while hunting and it always kept him warm.  Now, I can tell you some funny stories about my father hunting in the cold.... like the time he was so cold he hadn't realized that he broke his finger from the recoil of his shotgun and it wasn't until well after he'd gotten home later that day that he started complaining about how much his finger hurt... :P

But I digress.  I started looking for the charcoal sticks figuring I'd give it a shot, but no one seems to offer them anymore, so I started looking at the Zippo ones.  I bought one a few days ago and I'll be trying it out as soon as the weather starts to get cold.  If I like it I know what my father is getting for Christmas!

Ordinarily I'd be excited about giving a new toy a try, but in this case I am perfectly happy to let the cold weather hold off as long as it likes....  >:D

I have one working with lighter fuel.

I had to sleep a night in a car in winter, waiting to attend a LARP event, and I put it under my t-shirt.

The morning after I was not death-freezed, but I had a patch of no-pain, slowly-cooked skin on my chest. It lasted a few weeks.

My advice: not on bare skin :D

I have two of these and am very pleased with them, used them all last winter and did the trick for me. I must admit they can be a bit tricky to light and I did have them go out prematurely a couple of times (maybe user error?) but overall very good. Put another way, I don't think there is anything better out there currently? As said above, they need to be kept in their bags otherwise they are too hot.

Regards, Jon.

I have used mine once- I had it in the bag in an inside pocket in my jacket while working outside on a fairly chilly day last week.  I could feel the heat from it pretty well all day.  I'm not certain how much warmer it kept me, but I was glad it was there.  I think I may have to get a few of them and stitch a few more internal pockets in my jacket!

I love these things! Great way to stay warm all night long when camping in frosty weather. My sleeping bag has a pocket that puts the warmer right on my chest. I don't get cold. ;) I also put one in a shirt pocket or hung from a neck lanyard when I'm outside all day and not active. I tried two, but found it too hot.

I buy them at flea markets and get replacement burners for them off of eBay. I always use a pouch as they will either get too hot from all the extra air flow, or they can get cold and go out. I've cut pockets out of old denim and flannel shirts to make spare pouches for the flea market finds that inevitably don't have them.

I've found that white gasoline (aka Naphtha, camp stove fuel, Coleman fuel or Shellite) works real well in these warmers and have refilled empty lighter fluid bottles with it for convenient refuelling. I also keep a butane lighter handy as it works better for lighting the element without the risk of contaminating the catalyst.

Thanks Dave- I was wondering if camp stove fuel would work in it. I have a lot more naptha than lighter fluid.

Not at all. I have yet to replace a new burner. Only had to replace old ones from flea market purchases that were damaged or contaminated. One has to be careful when lighting the burner to not get it contaminated with soot. That is why I prefer to use a butane lighter rather than a match or Zippo lighter. Obviously, physical damage would require replacement. The burners are delicate, but well protected once the heater is assembled.

I was wondering that as well. You'd think something that was on fire for an extended period would need to be replaced eventually.

But then logic goes out the window with a product that you fill with flammable liquid, ignite and stick in your pocket.

So its burning the whole time its in your pocket?  That just feels wrong, but I guess it would get the job done.  Probably wouldnt make enough combustion fumes to do any harm, but feels odd to me.

Yes, it is "burning" all the time. Otherwise it wouldn't be making any heat! It is a catalytic combustion process that does NOT have a flame. The fuel vapours from the cotton filled body are catalyzed in the burner head, which glows a dull red from the heat produced, while keeping you warm.

If one follows the instructions, these are very safe. I wouldn't want to be waving one around while refuelling a car or working in an explosive environment, etc. But that should be "common sense". ;) There is a slight odour from the small amount of combustion fumes, but because it is a catalyzed process, the scent is minimal. I think of it as 'the smell of warm'. Similar to the smell of a camp fire. Up to your nose to decide if it is pleasant or obnoxious...
