Older GAK
on: February 06, 2011, 11:25:25 PM
Ijust got my GAK from amazon ( cutlery usa ). It was in bad shape but will clean up fairly well. My question is , what are the markings on the main blade.....   I.C.A.R. with rostfrei underneath. was this a vic product?

ICAR is the manufacturer, its not a Vic.  Several companies made GAKs to that pattern. There's a good article about it over on SOSAK Online.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I was fooled by the same company in early December. They advertised the knife as a Vic, and sent me an ICAR. After complaining to them through an Amazon online form, they agreed to take back the ICAR and send me a Vic. As soon as I emailed them to let them know that the ICAR was in the mail, they quickly told me that they had no Vic knives left, and were crediting my account. It looks like they tried to schlep the same knife onto you, in hopes that you wouldn't notice.

That article is very good read. In practical experience and not really that much surprising you will find the Victorinox GAK product is a much better product. I have some other GAK's like "CCM", "Aitor", and the one with the "Eagle" symbol "Adler". Some are not that bad.

$12 isn't bad.  ICAR and Aitor are both pretty good, in my experience.

I have a GAK made by Kissing Crane, solid but poorly finished compaired to my Vic safari model. Paid five bucks at a flea market for it. It's my go to "beater" knife.

I have one from TSR, haven't seen too many of those, nor do I know who TSR was/is.

I also have one made by Fox, but it's pretty shabby.
