Leatherman MUT: Wow! The potential is unbelievable!
on: February 27, 2011, 12:29:27 AM
I have a trade deal going. My part of the deal is to get a MUT and ship it in exchange for...

(I'll tell you later when it arrives!1!  :mail:)

Anyway.  When it arrived, I pulled it out briefly to make sure it was perfect and exactly what it was supposed to be (EOD black oxide).

Let me just say: "WOW!"

While I'm not in the market for the MUT (not a tool set I can use), the potential is unbelievable.

The MUT is basically the size of a Charge, but it has that AWESOME hammer on it.  Seriously useful!  Swap in a long bit driver, an awl and a file with the saw and blade and that baby would be my new EDC.  NO QUESTION.

The MUT platform is going to OWN the MT market.

Really? I thought it was actually around the size of the Surge or bigger... :-\

Interesting comment.

I didn't really get a chance to make an objective comparison.  I only had it out for a few minutes at most. Then repacked it for shipping. However, I never got the subjective feeling I get from my Surge.  It doesn't feel MASSIVE, like the Surge feels to me.

The pliers feel right (not huge), and in hand, it feels "right".  The Surge has always felt huge to me.  Too big for work on tractors for example. The MUT OTOH, feels like it's designed for use on equipment.

Someone else who has both tools (or all three) needs to do a head to head comparison for us.

Chako, we need pretty pictures! The ST300, ST and PL would be good too. Thanks. :)

From left to right: Leatherman Charge, Surge, ST300, and MUT. I moved the ST300 and MUT together due to the same plier head.

In length, the new daddy on the block is the MUT.

Weight wise....

Charge weighs in at 9 oz.
Surge weighs in at 12.8 oz.
ST300 weighs in at 11 oz.
MUT weighs in at 11.4 oz.

In weight, the Surge is still the heavy weight champion.
A little Leatherman information.

It's been a long time since I gave my Surge away, sometimes I forget just how beastly that thing is.

Mr. W. , the MUT is a great standalone tool - bit driver is now actually usefull . When mixed with a competent SAK , and if need be a folder - makes one hell of a cocktail .

I tried to use the mut and found it uncomfortable. One handle is longer than the surge and the other is the length of a wave. I wanted to hold it by the bottom of the handle where I would get the most leverage but I couldn't. If I carried it for a few weeks I could probably train myself to hold it differently and then not have that problem but I decided I would just continue with my current rotation.

Great shots Chako!  I love the MUT, wish I could spare the cash for one.  But like Whippy, I really have no use for the firearm maintenance components.  I have gun cleaning kits with all my guns, and I rarely have time to go and shoot.  I am more in the market for an EDC version of the MUT.

Love the Chako-signal!

Those pics surprise me.  It seems much more ergodynamic to my hand than a Surge.  Balanced or something.  It felt like a cross between a Charge and a beefed up Skeletool--again, I only handled it for a couple minutes, so that's a snap impression.

I really like the look of it, if they could figure out how to put some 91mm SAK style scissors in it and make an EDC version I would by it.  I love EDC'ing my ST300, but the MUT looks really cool and I am sure I would carry it.

I dig the emergency bolt charging function, hammer poll, replaceable wire cutting blades and the big main knife blade but the carbon scraper is something I have never used up to this point preferring the bronze brush in the rifle's exiting cleaning kit.

Does it have a diamond file in it?

Nope.

I wonder if the carbon scraper could be swapped for the diamond file from a Wave or Charge? Even if I had to grind some of it to the same profile as the bronze scraper it would certainly be more useful for me. I have worn the diamond file on my XTi(thanks for the correction) to almost nothing due to it's usefulness in knocking off burrs and squaring the heads of retaining pins in the field.

This is exciting, you guys have really inspired me.

I agree on the MUT having potential. However the uneven feel on the handles and the lack of a file are deal breakers for me. Its just a little to awkward for me to justify as a useful tool.
As far as the hammer goes I am not impressed. I have used the side of my ChALX and that is also pretty useful as a hammer; as is anything you can use to beat on a nail...
I am surprised to see that its only a half oz heavier than the ST300, I might just have to take it out of the box again and re-examine it.

Loose the hammer on the MUT (like lots (incl. me) did with the caribiner on the Skely) and it looks like it is not much taller than the Charge. Then it is really a Skely on steriods  :ahhh

Well the problem with removing the hammer is that the cutter goes with it, as does the cover for the bit driver.

Hmm, I see... But cut it than right next to bit retain thingy, that would work no? I know, you'll loose the cutter but there is already a blade present. And the hammer, it sure does look cool, but my Wave functions perfectly well as a hammer. I'm sure the MUT will do as well even without the specific hammer  :D

I never liked the gun specific tool load out of the MUT but now I think about the mod potential.... Hell, I need a MUT, and a winning lotary ticket  ::)

I've been out of the new multitool loop for a while now.  Is there any talk of using the MUT as a basis for a more general purpose tool?

Cool thread guys.  Love the comparison shots Chako.

Thanks.

If this means anything, I bought an extra MUT for my motorcycling belt. I found that the dedicated tools are as versatile as any other. The longer bits is a big plus in my books. and the size and weight of it is a bonus if I break down somewhere. It means I can carry less in my repair kit if necessary.

I think it is a great tool, and not just meant for the weapons enthusiast crowd.

Likewise,  although it is larger than the Surge, the Surge still does feel larger due to its shape and extra weight...which is noticeable in a side by side comparison.

I also bought the MUT (Stainless steel standard version) a couple of weeks ago and have not used it even once except from looking at it. I agree that this tool may be the start of a future more average application friendly model.
I since regret the purchase as I am not going to use it ever.

I am thinking of swapping it for other Leatherman models but shipping is still an obstacle for me. I don't want to wait forever.

Johan
