Can mods see who voted for what in polls? If so, I think I have a better way to do giveaways in the future.

I've seen an effective way of doing giveaways on another forum  :tu:

Basically if you're interested you just reply with 'I'm in' or similiar. Your post number becomes your entry number  :D Random.org does the rest  :tu:

I have seen a comp go terribly wrong elsewhere  :ahhh People didn't copy & paste, people got left out, etc. It was for a really great prize so quite a few got pi$$ed when they were left out; me included.

It's not a difficult concept to copy & paste but I suppose if you're new to forum life...

Hopefully they posted for the giveaway but stay for the multitools  :D

OK. Then that plan won't work. Another option would be to build a javascript system that kept track of everything for us. Mods can use [ html ] to add it to a post. Nothing's gone wrong yet, but I think we should be proactive.

Hey mods: if you want you can change the thread title to some thing like "giveaway ideas" so people know what we are talking about. It will also make this post even funnier:

Yeah I've seen that as well, seems to work.  Just so long as folks don't go off into pages and pages of off-topic stuff it'll be......ah, not going to work is it? :-\

 :D

Seriously though it's definitely a possibility.  :tu:

I'm not sure if this is what Ari meant at the beginning (I am very slow sometimes)  :-\
Is there a way of having for example a one option vote and the software running this site (as it already knows if I have voted or not) compile a list of those that have voted,
then using random.org to pick a number after a certain time
or is that what you lot have been talking about?

That was my original plan, but it seems the mods can't see who voted for what. After that, we were just brainstorming.

Surely the 'mastermod' is able to see (same as an administrator on a PC?)

Oh well think I will leave this for a teckie person :tu:

My brain has been 'stormed' for years now  :ahhh

A specific module for that would be the best solution. I think there is a lottery module available for SMF that implements this "giveway" feature, but never worked with it.

It is surprising the forum software people haven't created something specifically for competitions  :-\
It could be setup with a built in number randomiser  :D

Most forums do giveaways of some sort these days  :tu:

Random.org is simple and free :)

Though admittedly a bit boring.  I'm using the UK National lottery to pick tomorrows winner in the slippie giveaway, just for a change of scenery :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.
