There's always the possibility of a catastrophic failure wiping out the entire server, but the forum should be safe. It may be down for a couple of days for reconstruction, but we have a daily backup, meaning our worst case scenario is that we should lose a maximum of 24 hours worth of posts. In the event that the backup was corrupt, we store the last 30 days of backups, so hopefully that means we should be able to back up from one of the previous days.
Of course I hope it never happens, but we should be covered if it does. Still, I imagine CPF may have thought the same thing, and probably had similar measures in place. The reality is that anything can happen- for example, if the forum was compromised by some kind of forum eating bug, then we'd have a lot of infected and corrupt backups to draw on, and that probably wouldn't help us very much- we'd have to go back to the last time we were clean, if such a backup existed, and we could loose an awful lot of info.
