What kind of collector are you?

Poll

What are you?

Hardcore collector (tries to own every model ever made)
Collector (maybe not every model but has an interest in some rare/limited ones)
Functional collector (only buys what he/she can use but it's slowly getting out of hand)
Functional buyer (only buys what he/she can use and that aint much)
Newbie (is newly interested in SAKs and may or may not have one or two)

Hope I didn't leave out anything overly important.
I know this doesn't cover modders and tinkerers but that's another poll altogether. ;)

I'm definitely a user rather than a collector, but I can justify (to myself anyway) owning 16 MT's and about 40 SAKs. :D

And as for me I'd say functional collector. I started off just picking up what I need but it seems I need more and more. Now I have 4 SAKs and a Swisstool Spirit X and I'm looking into getting more.
...Hey it's not like I'm not going to use them.

Hi
Very interesting questions.
I could not find a poll for me, i can explain, I am pretty much interested in every Victorinox and Wenger models, i collect to collect and collect to learn about history and development. I like the period 1960 until today best, This i can use to inform other people and use on my webpage. It is not easy to have discussion points without models in hand.
I love the Swiss quality, If a should put a scale on how much i like them? then i am a top class interested. My hobby i hope to make into a kind of concept, if that is a correct word.I am interested in the evolution, dates, functions, materials, how its made, emblems, stamps, news, other products..... and the list goes on....

Only started collecting recently and going strong at just over 100 SAK's now.
Love collecting them and mainly go for the vintage and rare alox models.
I carry a 77' Vic Soldier with me every day.  :salute:

I use every piece of gear I buy, and for they loose value that way, I keep most of them. That´s why my collection keeps on growing ;)

Oh hum... ::)

Functional collector.  Can I justify my Atwoods?  Mostly.  But 4 whistles?  ::)

And my rainbow coalition of Farmers? 6 or seven backups, maybe?

Damascus Wave? err...

I have used my Vic XAVT and want to make a lockable case for my office--love its barometer.

Definitely not hardcore however.  Definitely not.  :)

i dont class myself as a collector as due to funds my tools need a function or they go, that said i now have 2 gaks and see this becoming a collection with only one being used  :D

Collector.  I have over 50, with 1 more scheduled to arrive today.....a deluxe tinker I won on e-bay.

For the record: I nominate Chako for choice #1: wants to buy every one ever made.   He CERTAINLY qualifies for that title!!!!

I have: 1884-1984 set (1 on e-bay going for $250, I didn't pay that when I bought mine!!!), 1897-1997 sets, 125th set minus the repro issue one.

I like can keyed Phillips screwdriver ones.

I like Champions.

When I deploy soon to Middle East, I am bringing: Champion, 2009-dated issue SAK, SOG PowerPlier blasting cap multitool in black oxide....and will probably bring a Cold Steel SRK in paratrooper deluxe sheath made by SpecOps.  I was also issued a Benchmade seat-belt cutter, have to bring that, and might bring my Benchmade Mini-Stryker automatic opening/switchblade knife.

I was issued (over 2 occassions) 2x Gerber M600 multitools.  Not impressed.   SOG or Vic tools are better IMO. They are still NIB and sealed in the plastic bag.  I am not bringing those.

+1 :tu:  Actually, that is not true my wife tells me "If you want it then get it." (I love that girl).
I am the one that likes money more then "stuff"

I am the worst collector. I collect whatever I like; there is really now rhyme or reason.

So I have Case knives mixed in with Wenger and Victorinox and Cold Steel etc....

I picked "Functional collector" but reconsidering, I guess the description of "Functional buyer" is more appropriate to me, although not a "perfect match". I classify myself somewhere between these two: I buy stuff mainly to give it a practical use, but I end up keeping a few with no use at all, just to sit there. This also happens with kitchen knives and with some other stuff. All this at the small scale: I've just 9 sak+mt (and 11 kitchens knives btw).

I am really not a collector...more of an accumulator.

Actually, I don't want one of everything, and at around 500 SAKs, I haven't bought many recently.

I have to go with Chako's write in, accumulator. Although I accumulate with intent to mod, so I'm acquiring 91mms and 84s and 111s when I can get them cheap.

That's the poll's fault, that's a pretty narrow definition for a hardcore collector.

Mostly functional. I tend not to buy something -- anything -- that I don't at least see myself using. That's not to say that there aren't pieces in my collections that end up being safe queens, but I never intend it to happen.
