Little Surprised at Mythbusters
on: November 02, 2007, 02:25:46 AM
I can't remember which episode it was, but I was watching one a few days ago in which Adam used (or rather tried to use) a Hibben Double Shadow to cut something.

Hibben's knives, produced by United Cutlery (actually, not produced by, but marketed by after being produced in China) are pretty much decorative and not useful for anything.  The steel is crappy and the blades are extremely thick, and as Adam seemed to quickly find out, they really don't cut well at all.  He made an initial crappy cut in whatever it was, then almost instantly pulled out his Leatherman, which you then saw on the table, handier than the silly fixed blade.

I would think that a guy doing a job like that would know better than to waste his time with cheap tools.  I am guessing that he knows that now!

He uses a charge right? And Jamie has a Powerlock? Or a Pocket Power Plier?

I am pretty certain it's a Charge or maybe a Wave.  I'm pretty certain that Jamie uses a PowerLock.

Yes, he has a Charge and an original Wave. But what charge would you say? I think a Ti perhaps? Jamie usually uses a Gerber though- a 800 legend and a recoil.

Interesting- I have only ever seen Jamie use the SOG.  I guess I need to watch more TV!

Another thing I find interesting is that I never see the sheaths on their belts.  Where the heck do they carry them?

About that, um... interesting... fixed blade: Maybe it was a gift from a well intentioned but uniformed friend of his. That makes the most sense to me. ;)

Gil Hibben designs a fancy knife every year.  The Double Shadow was 1991's model.  It was an update to 1990's Shadow (aka Single Shadow) which was a simple dagger, and the first of the series.

Many of his models show up in TV and movies because they are fancy.  One of his models, the Raven, was in Mortal Combat.  They are pretty, and one of these days, when I have money to waste, I may consider getting a few of them (if not the whole set) but for the most part I have better things to spend money on!

The Rambo knives are kind of a letdown too.  The first and second ones were designed by Jimmy Lile and started the hollow handle survival knife craze of the 80's.  So, given a successful track record like that, what do they do for the third one?  Toss Mr Lile, a REAL knifemaker out on his arse and get Gil Hibben in to design a solid handled knife.  I wonder who designed the knife for the next Rambo movie- Kit Rae?

On all of the episodes I've seen, Adam uses his old style Wave with a sheath similar to a polycarbonate Juice sheath. The only time I've seen Jamie use a tool was when I caught a breif glimpse of a Gerber in his hand. I'm not sure which model, but it had the flick-out pliers. I've seen Jamie use a regular folding knife, but I couldn't identify it. I can say that it wasn't a Spyderco, for sure. I don't think it was a SOG. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Benchmade. Benchmade is my guess.

For screenshots of Adam's Wave, check the later pages of the Mythbusters thread. I posted three or four shots back when I wasn't as lazy. :P

Jamie definitely has a SOG- that's the one I see the most, but then I don't seem to watch as much as I should!

That's pretty well what I was thinking.  I wonder if a fan thought it was cool and sent it in as a gift, and he felt inclined to try and use it?  It really doesn't seem to fit with everything else on the show- they seem very utilitarian for the most part, and a fancy, decorative knife just doesn't seem like it belongs.

Well if you are planning on going anywhere in the next couple of weeks, I'd suggest borrowing a wrench from someone a little closer!   >:D

Gil Hibben did the knife for Rambo 4.The knives he makes are not bad, just the ones that United makes. Many years back when I was alot younger,he was at the Cleveland Sportsman show.It was right after Rambo 3 came out.I got to speak with him and look at the the knife he put together. He was a very nice person and took time to speak with me and answer my questions.I am sure he knew that at my age I did not have no where near the money to purchase a handmade editon, but without even batting an eye he let me look at the knife and handle it.It was put together quite well and damm sharp. He has been around for a long time,so I figure he must be doing something right.
I have a United "RamboIII" and there is NO comparision, although I will admit I bought the knife when I was alot younger and did not know better.I took the knife out and beat the hell out of it.I took it out to the field several times during an FTX and everone in the unit used it to chop up various things that needed chopping.I am suprised that neither I or anyone else did not have the blade go flying. The handle would come loose now and again and I would have to retighten the nut.All United did was use a welded on threaded Tang. But,despite my best efforts I could not break it.I will finish by saying that it was no where near as sharp as my KaBar.Looking at it now I realize that it is a,I guess the best way to put it is a "Piece of Junk" that capitalized on the popularity of a movie.I still have but dont use my "Rambo" knife. I certainly would not trust my life to it knowing what I know now.I defientley realize I was lucky that it did not come apart and injure someone or myself.

I think that Jimmy Lile was a great knifemaker also.A DI at Fort Jackson had one of his "First Blood" knives and took it to the field quite a bit.I watched him use that knife hard several times without ever having a problem with it.

He let me try it out a few times when we were cutting branches and such for camoflauge, opening up fire lanes ,ect along with the standard knife chores.from the limited exposure I had to it,it was a damm good knife.

Just my 2 cents Hope I did not offend.I will say that I will have to watch "Mythbusters" alot more.It is my 2 boy's favorite show.

Well, you make enough posts there's bound to be a good one here and there! :P

That is my biggest concern with knives from companies like United and Taylor.  At least those funky fantasy sword things are likely not ever going to be used, but the more "functional" looking designs, and names suggest a hard working knife, which none of them are.

I hope everyone who is injured by those knives and tools sue the living hell out of those companies.
